The town developed around a sawmill that operated from 1868 to 1886. In 1870, two brothers founded what would become the first grocery store in Oswego Township when they opened a general store at 207 Wabash Avenue. By 1890, there were six grocery stores operating in Oswego Township; three owned by German immigrants and three by Italian Americans. The first telephone service arrived in Oswego Township in 1912. By 1914, there were 11 businesses operating within the township limits; six of which were groceries or feed stores. In 1924, John Cavanaugh built what would become one of the most significant buildings inOswego: The United Methodist Church (now called First Presbyterian). During World War II, much ofOswego’s commercial development took place as part of efforts to support military production within the state of Illinois; many businesses reopened after the war ended. In 1951-1952, Oswego voters passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against homosexuals in local businesses; this ordinance remains extant to this day and is still considered an important part of town history.
