Oswego, Illinois is a small town located in the southern part of the United States. The population was 3,463 at the 2010 census. Oswego is known for its cheese and apple cider production. The town was founded in 1824 by General David Dixon and his family. The village of Oswego first appeared on map in 1827 when John Neely surveyed a land grant to Nicholas Bligh from James Kinsman. In 1840, General Daniel Butler granted 2,000 acres (8 km2) to Jacob Sennett in recognition of his services during the American Civil War. In 1845, Nathaniel Wright sold 1,500 acres (60 km2) to Andrew Goddard for $5 per acre ($130 per hectare). In 1851, Nathan Brooks donated 10 acres (4 ha) to the Village of Oswego for use as a public school ground. The school opened in December 1851 with 9 students and one teacher. A new building was built on the site in 1865-66 and replaced an earlier structure that had been burned down in 1861. The current building was erected in 1916-17 by local contractor Charles Wickersham Jr.. In 1922, Drury Well Pumping Company purchased 3200 square feet (232 m2) of land adjacent to their plant at 299 Main Street from private owner Maurice Cline for $1 per acre ($25 per hectare). Drury Well Pumping Company became a subsidiary of Rockwell Automotive Corporation which merged into GM Production Company in 1987. Rockwell Automotive Corporation manufactured vehicles until it too merged into Chrysler Group LLC on January 1st, 2014 effective January 1st 2013 inclusive. folklore has it that if you knock on the door of Rockwell Automotive Corp’s old manufacturing plant located off Route 66 just north of downtown Oswego they would usually give you some free stuff if you were ever lucky enough to work there! This included cars like Ford Pinto’s and Plymouth Volaris!
