The oldest settlement in Orland Park was a small farmstead dating back to 1837. A post office called Orland Park was established in 1851 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1875, developer Amos Clemens erected the first skyscraper in Chicago – the Clemens Tower – on what is now State Street near Madison Avenue. At that time, Chicago had only a few thousand residents and Orland Park had a population of around 100 people. In 1898, Orland Park became part of the new City of Chicago; however, it reverted to its original name after two years when Chicago annexed all of Kane County (the other three cities being Danville, Elmhurst and Englewood). During World War II (1939-1945), many ornaments made from aluminum were produced by American Aircraft Corporation (now Boeing) at their Willow Run Arsenal outside of Orland Park; these ornaments are now on display at the University Museum in Oak Brook IL .
