The city is the county seat of Cook County and was named after Orland Park, a small town in Ontario, Canada. Orland Park is bordered to the north by Aurora Township and to the east by Chicago Heights Township. To the south it borders Lake Forest on one side and Cicero Township on the other side. Orland Park was founded in 1881 by farmers from Indiana and Ohio who bought land near present day Waukegan. The city grew rapidly due to its key railway connections; it became an important transportation hub for agricultural goods and coal during the turn of the century. In 1906, Orland Park annexd Chicago Heights which had been part of Aurora Township since 1837. After years of growth and development, Orland Park incorporated as a municipality on February 14th, 1932. Reflecting its growing popularity as a vibrant commercial center with many cultural attractions (including three major theaters), Orland Park annexed neighbouring communities (Aurora to the north, Chicago Heights to the east and Cicero to southeast) between 1961-1967 including Fordham Road in 1954 and North Side Avenue in 1958 making it one of America's most comprehensive streetcar suburbs The suburban trend continued into the 1990s when Orland Parks annexation of neighboring communities led to rapid growth in employment opportunities for residents within walking distance of their workplaces - becoming known as "the new suburbia." On July 1, 1861, Orland Park became an incorporated Village with a Board of Trustees. On December 12th 1903 after years of discussion by residents and business owners alike, voters approved changes to the Village Charter which allowed for liquor sales within the confines of the Village limits. In 1905-1906Orland Park hosted its first parade which attracted over 100 participants from throughout Kane County.
