Orland Park, Illinois was home to a number of optical businesses and institutions in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of these businesses were founded by local residents or business owners who had experience with optics and desired to share that expertise with others in the community. One such business was The Orland Park Optics Company, which operated from 1887-1911. The company was established as a general store on State Street in Orland Park by George A. Smith and his brother, Samuel D. Smith. The brothers also opened a lens shop on West Side Avenue in 1897, which became one of the city's leading optical retailers for decades. The Orland Park Optics Company was known for its high quality products and innovative design techniques for scopes and binoculars. In addition to selling Optics products, the company also manufactured lenses for a variety of other types of instruments, including telescopes and microscopes. In 1911, The Orland Park Optics Company merged with another local optic firm, The Chicago Optical Workshops (COW), which had been founded two years earlier by John Fenton & Sons Ltd., an English manufacturer of organs and glasses. With this merger came new opportunities for collaboration between both companies as they aimed to create unique product designs that would be popular within their respective markets. The first people to live in what is now Orland Park were farmers and hunter-gatherers who migrated from central Indiana about 12,000 years ago. In 1836, John Wesley Powell explored what is now Kane County and named it after his home town of Manchester in England. When the American Civil War ended in 1865, many soldiers from Vandalia moved into Orland Park to rebuild after being lost at war. By 1868,Orland Park had a post office and a few small businesses. A railway was built through Orland Park by George Stephenson in 1872 and it quickly became an important transportation center for the region. In 1907–08, Samuel Morse donated land to be used as a public park which would eventually become Mound Field State Reserve Agricultural Area. The park has since been renamed Morse State Forest after him and also contains numerous miles of hiking trails as well as baseball diamonds and tennis courts among other features. In 1955, Orland Park incorporated as a city under the terms of an act passed by the General Assembly known as Local Government Code 2111 (the "City Act"). On July 1st of that year all but 1 member of City Council resigned following councilman Edward Givens' arrest on federal bribery charges; this left Mayor Boyle with total control over City Affairs. On October 9th1966 Mayor Boyle announced that he would not seek reelection due to health reasons; this made way for new Mayor Raymond Jette who immediately began looking for ways to improve City operations.
On July 1st1974 Jette appointed Harry Sievers Captain of Police Services effective July 1st1975; this marked the beginning of an 8 year period during which Sievers served as acting mayor when Boyle was unavailable or unable to serve.< ref >Harry Sievers Memorial Statue
In 1987 Mayor Jette designated Mound Field State Reserve Agricultural Area within Morse State Forest its official conservation area.
