Hockaday used a stake and an old post to hold targets on his property. By 1872, there were at least six target holders in Orland Park. Most of these targets were used for hunting purposes, but some were dedicated to shooting competitions. In 1898, the first rifle competition in Orland Park took place. The event was considered very important at the time as it helped promote Rifle shooting as a serious sport in America. At this event, many famous shooters participated including Adolphus Bowman and Jesse Winchester. Between 1899 and 1912, there were additional rifle competitions held in Orland Park. These events served as an opportunity for shooters from all over America to compete against one another and learn about firearms their own way. Additionally, these competitions gave players the chance to win valuable prizes such as rifles and pistols. By 1915, there had been enough modifications made to the target holders that they became known as “Targets” modelholders. Targets modelholders were designed specifically for use with rifles instead of using traditional posts or stakes like earlier models. The history of Orland Park dates back to 1853 when General David Dixon bought 640 acres (246 hectares) east of present-day Orland Park from the Potawatomi Indians for $5 per acre (1 hectare). Dixon founded what would become Orland Park as a gentlemen's settlement on this land. The first post office was established in 1857 and named Indianola after a village in Canada Parish in Louisiana where some early settlers had settled before moving to Illinois. In 1861 Dixons moved his business operations south to what became downtown Orland Park after buying an old mill site on Ottawa Street near Desplaines Avenue. Dixon died in 1865 and his widow continued to run the business until her death two years later; it then passed through her son George Dixon's hands until it was purchased by John Withers in 1879. Withers developed it into an agricultural center with several large farms providing feed for local livestock and selling produce directly to consumers; he also built several homes around town which remain standing today as examples of Italianate architecture or "downtown" architecture at that time. In 1898 Withers sold his holdings to James Haughton who formed Haughton & Company transportation company with fifteen employees engaged principally in shipping goods between Chicago and other Midwest cities; this company eventually became part of American Telephone & Telegraph Company following Haughton's death in 1923." In 1850, the brothers built a log cabin on the swamp and named it "Moses". The name was changed to "Orland" in 1853 to honor General Henry Dearborn, who had helped lead the United States during the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Orland Park opened in 1851. In 1865, the town became a city with its own government. After being annexed by Cook County in 1897, Orland Park became one of Chicago's 45 wards. In 1907, OrLAND PARK PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT was created when Cook County merged with DuPage County to form what is now Illinois State government.
