Orland Park is the third-largest city in Chicago and it borders the municipalities of Skokie to the east and Northbrook to the west. The city was founded on December 12, 1868, by George Washington Carver. It became part of Chicago when that city was created on May 25, 1895. The history of Orland Park can be traced back to 1868 when George Washington Carver came to America from England as part of a group of American agriculturists seeking new land for their families and businesses. After landing in Chicago on December 12th he set out to locate a site for his own town which would eventually become Orland Park. One year later he made another discovery in what would become Skokie; this time an area rich with coal seams that could be used for locomotives and steamboats transporting goods across the Great Lakes region. In 1870 work began on what would soon become known as Carver's Grove; an area now occupied by much of downtown Orland Park as well as several neighborhoods including Hyde Park and Elmhurst (just north of present day Kreshnack Drive). It wasn't until 1872 that Carver had his first success with a tract of land adjoining present day Kreshnack Drive/East Side Highway; this property became known as West Side Road or simply WSR for short. During this time many small businesses were started within or around what today is Downtown Orland Park including shoe stores, grocery stores and meat markets before streetcar service arrived along WSR in 1875 providing much needed transportation resources for local entrepreneurs during those early days before mass transit becamecommonplace throughout Chicagoland! In 1876 Carver sold his final piece into what would eventually becomeOrlando Avenue/Clarence Street where he lived until his death on February 14th 1902 from natural causes at age 75 years old! Two years later WSR received its first passenger train - an express train called the Northwestern Railway Company's Bruce Line which ran between Western Station (now Union Station) in Garysburg IL & Midway IL daily! Although not originally designed for travel within Chicago limits it quickly proved popular among students attending South Pointe High School located just south of WSR - making it oneof only a few public schools lacking any kind of rail connection during those earliest days! Many members living close by also took advantageofWSR's unique ability to get around University District restrictions placed upon suburban residents traveling outside Village Limits! This allowed people such as Driscoll Brothers candy store founders John & Joseph Clifton Sr..to open up their business right next door barring customers from coming down State Street between Clarendon Avenue & University Circle while they built up their inventory! It was via these connections that young businessmen like Willis Durant learned about marketing themselves effectively through owning property adjacentto major universities rather than relying exclusivelyupon word-of-mouth advertising campaigns!! Orland Park was founded in 1827 by wealthy farmers George Washington and Lewis Morgan. The village grew slowly until the opening of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1846 drew business away from neighboring villages. The Panic of 1857 caused a decline in population, and Orland Park was abandoned for a time. It re-emerged as a small town when the Illinois Central Railroad was built through it in 1879. The railroad made Orland Park one of its stops, and it continued to grow as a residential community until 1955, when it became an incorporated municipality.
