The name "Orland Park" originated from a small settlement on the banks of the Chicago River called Orlanda. After Stephenson's death in 1865, his son Samuel took over as director of Rolling Stock for the Illinois Central Railroad and renamed the station Griggs Station after Groves' old home on Milwaukee Avenue in downtown Chicago. On April 6, 1870, during American Civil War considerations about whether to enter into war with Confederate States of America (CSA), General Alexander McClellan appointed Colonel James Hutton to visit different Union military posts around Illinois to study their defenses better so he could make decisions concerning whether or not to cross over into CSA territory and fight. Hutton arrived at Griggs Station where he met Samuel Stephenson who told him that there were no permanent defense positions within 10 miles (16 km) of Griggs Station other than Fort Dearborn which was under construction at that time. McClellan then ordered Hutton to march his forces upriver all the way to Fort Dearborn without stopping for encampments or supplies so he could surprise Confederate forces camped near that location and capture them before they could build any fortifications against future attacks
Orland Park was founded on April 12, 1847 by George Washington Morrison and his wife Anna. The town was named for Orland, Virginia, where the Morrions had a home. The town was first settled along the east side of the Chicago River. In 1859, Morrison donated land to build a cemetery in Orland Park. The town received its charter from the Illinois General Assembly on January 10, 1860.
