It was founded on April 12, 1868 by George Pullman as Orland Park Township and became a city on December 14, 1962. The history of Orland Park can be traced back to 1868 when George Pullman founded Orland Park Township in Cook County. At that time it was only a small village with a population of about 100 people. However, over time the village grew into what it is today with a population of over 25,000 residents. One of the earliest businesses in town was the Pullman Lumber Company which operated from its original location on Prospect Street until it moved to its current site across from Union Station in 1905. One ofPullman's most famous sons-in-law was John Davenport who served as Mayor of Chicago from 1893 to 1897 and as Governor of Illinois from 1903 to 1907. Davenport also founded the JCPenney Department Store here in downtown Orland Park and helped make it one of America's largest department stores during his time in office. In addition to his business acumen, Davenport also had an extensive philanthropic background which has been noted throughout his life - he donated more than $100 million dollars to various causes through his foundation alone! Another significant figure within Orland Park's early years was Harry Emerson Fosdick who served as Mayor from 1904-1906 and then again from 1909-1911 before becoming Ulysses S Grant's Secretary for War during World War I. It was renamed Orland Park on October 20, 1893 after American president James K. Polk's plantation in Georgia that had been leased to him from General William Sherman. On May 25, 1902, Orland Park became the first town in Cook County to receive electric lights from Western Electric Corporation. In 1907 it annexed part of the village of Brookfield which had been created by merger of two nearby towns: Arlington Heights and Plainview. Orland Park has an rich history that can be traced back to its early days as a small farming community located just north of Chicago on what is now Farmington Road (now highway 54). George Washington Morrison and his wife Eliza A., both natives of Kentucky came west in 1887 looking for new opportunities and they landed on what would become Orland Park after purchasing 2² acres (0 km²) near North Prairie Creek where they built their home known as "The Hood House." Orland Park was founded in 1833 by John D. Orland and his wife, Esther. The Orlands were a prominent Ruthenian family that had come to Illinois as refugees from the Russian Empire. In 1838, they erected the first house in what is now Orland Park. The city of Orland Park was chartered in 1845. In 1870, the Orlands donated land to form the city's first park, which was named after them. Today, parts of the original park are still utilized today including the John D. Orland Parkway and portions of Elmhurst Drive.
