Orland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 102,353 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The Orland Park–Kenilworth Community School District serves most of Orland Park. The first settler in what is now Orland Park was John Pemberton. He platted the town on November 7, 1837 and named it for his home state of Ontario, Canada. In 1838, Nathan Hale bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land east of the Chicago River for $325 from John Stephenson and built a small cabin thereon called "Hale's Cabin". By 1840, Hale had also erected a small frame courthouse and jail which served as the town hall until its demolition in 1886. In 1846 Wm Hanks organized what would become the first farmers' market in Orland Park with four wagonloads of produce brought to him by horse and buggy from Mount Prospect near Chicago each week during the warm months; he became known as "the Father of Market gardening." A gristmill was built soon afterward by Ephraim Smith and started operation in 1850; but it closed down within two years due to lack of water power and competition from other mills licensed by Congress to grind flour for war supplies. After leaving Harper's Ferry on April 9 1865 following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Camp Douglas north of Orland Park on May 10th to celebrate his troops' recent victories over Confederate forces at Vicksburg ( Mississippi) and Chickamauga ( Georgia). After spending three days inspecting troops under his command before setting off southward towards Springfield Barracks on May 12th he camped near present day Lake George west of Orland Park late that night where he took rest upon arriving at Springfield Barracks early next morning on May 13th before continuing his march southward towards Springfield via Union Bridge over I-65 that afternoon having covering fire support from Confederate artillery batteries dug into positions along both banks of the river opposite Union Bridge throughout their crossingage! On July 4th 1861 General Ulysses S Grant delivered an address entitled "Averell Harriman: His Life and Times"before a large audience assembled at McCormick Place in Philadelphia – one notable attendee being Abraham Lincoln who noted that "he [Grant] seems very like our father". speeches were given by Secretary Edwin Stanton (1839-1912), Congressman James Kenedy (1851-1924), Senator Andrew Johnson (3rd Term 1860-1868), Representative Chandler Harris (cousin Benjamin Fenton Harris Jr.) cosponsored with Senators David Davis(R AL)and Horatio Seymour(D MA). On September 15 1861 when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter they burned all but two buildings within sight or sound of then Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Leavenworth’s 2nd Regiment Tennessee Infantry Volunteers garrisoning fortification about two miles northwest cornering said fortification on State Road 36 between Columbia Pike & Yorktown Rd thence up said road about six miles thence across said railroad track opposite rear door entrance thereof known as White House Landing aforesaid - this event taking place just beyond point mentioned - total destruction amounting to 116 buildings including barracks & stable capacity etc., not including fences which still stand parts demolished except some portion western side front yard org high school building
