Orland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 66,813 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-most populous city in Illinois and the eleventh-largest city in Chicago. Orland Park is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Orland Park were Lenape Native Americans who hunted and gathered Wildflowers along the Ottawa River. European explorers discovered a large area between Peoria and Joliet on September 6, 1779 when Captain Samuel Adams anchored his ship "Hero" off the mouth of the Kankakee River. He reported finding “a great Quantity of wild Rapes” including seventy-six beaver dams nearby and he named this new discovery “Orland Park” after John Orlando, 2nd Baronet (1715–88). At first only part of what is now Orland Park was explored; later parts became known as Vandalia Township and North Aurora Township. In 1802 land was donated by Jonathan Edwards to become Orland Park Township; it extended from Willard Avenue east to Lake Street and west to Ridge Road. In 1847 much of this township was annexed by Rockford following an election held in that year in which farmers voted to annex all their villages except Geneva which remained unannexed because its residents refused to secede from Rockford. On November 3, 1849, following an election for mayor and school board members held at Union Hall on Dearborn Street, Caproni purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) east of Union Hall from James Burt for $2 per acre ($27 per hectare). Burt had offered $10 per acre for the tract butCaproni accepted it because he needed more space for his lumberyards near South Side Railroad Station where he served as stationmaster during construction of tracks connecting Rockford withChicago viathe Northwest Branch Railroad Company (NBC). On July 31st 1851 Caproni sold another 1/4 mile (1 km) east of Union Hall to Abraham Lincoln for $3 per acre ($30 per hectare). This tract included what is now Old West Side Village which formed part of Rockford until it was annexed into Chicago on February 14th 1860 by Mayor Moody & Alderman Holmes just prior to Lincoln's inauguration as President on April 12th 1860. It should be noted that althoughOld West Side Village formed partofRockford until itwas annexed intoChicago on February 14th 1860 by Mayor Moody & Alderman Holmes just prior to Lincoln's inauguration as President on April 12th 1860 - according to historical records it actually began functioning as a separate municipality called West Side Village shortly afterwards! In 1861 Tompkinsville Borough became one unit with Orland Park due largely to disagreements over taxes levied against Tompkinsville residents living within or adjacenttoorand allegedly benefiting from manufacturing activity at Wabash Iron Works located several miles northwest in Batavia Township while also benefitting from transportation connections available through Batavia Junction railway station - village boundaries hardened considerably once again following annexation! however such disputes did not prevent subsequent municipalities like Crystal Cityfrom forming around similar industrial areas – notably Crystal Lakeheights – throughout Cook County during this period! Orland Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Orland Park was founded on November 3, 1871 by George W. Stephenson and his wife Lucy as a small farming community named after Orland Park in Dorset, England. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the western edge of Cook County and its access to the Chicago River. When Congress extended gambling rights to Illinois in 1893, Orland Park became one of the first towns in that state to accept gaming licenses. In 1903, Orland Park accepted an invitation from Mayor John Vanderlip to become the site of Mundelein College; that campus now occupies much of downtown Orland Park. The city's growth slowed during World War I andafterward while it remained largely rural until the mid-20th century when there were some rapid industrialization projects such as processing foods for Post Office canners or making Textile Mill No. 1 available for use by General Motors Corporation (later Ford Motor Company). However, these endeavors did not lead to significant job growth or new housing development until after World War II when Interstate 90 was built through central Illinois and suburban communities began popping up around or near Steeles Avenue in northeast Chicago; this freeway corridor led directly to postwar suburbs such as Arlington Heights and Tinley Park which metastasized into what is now Edgewater neighborhood within minutes of each other along Lake Shore Drive
Orland Park was first settled in 1824 by John O'Leary and his wife, Ann. The town was named for George Orland, an early settler. In 1837, the Orland Park Manufacturing Company was founded and became one of the largest textile companies in America. In 1916, the Orland Park United Methodist Church was built.
