Orland Park, Illinois is home to the world’s largest Ammo manufacturing plants. The Orland Park Armory was built in 1892 and has been manufacturing ammunition ever since. Ammunition production peaked in World War I with an output of over 1 million rounds per day. The history of ammunition begins with powderkegs that were used to make shot for cannons on land and at sea. In 1665, Dutch traders discovered a process by which they could make cannonballs out of pinecones that would fly into the sky like arrows when fired from a cannonball launcher (Fritsch & van der Walt 1908). This discovery led to the development of artillery shells which were made from lead or other heavy minerals (Maunder 1910). Cannonballs were created when two or more kegs of powder were detonated at close range (Langbein 1901). These balls would fly through the air and hit their target causing damage or destruction (Gouda 1969). A few years after this discovery, small blast furnaces were started in Amsterdam that produced around 1000 kg/day worth of lead shot (Fritsch 1909). It wasn’t until 1795 that bullet design was developed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte who named his new projectile “Hercules” after Greek god who was known for his strength and armor piercing abilities (Cook 1893). By 1800, carcass powder had become available so armorers began using it instead of lead shot (Boyd 1913; Cook 1893). By 1830-31, muzzle loading rifles had been developed so artillery could be fired without Reloading often required days or weeks!(Cook 1893) By 1850 percussion cap cartridges had become available so armorers could fire multiple shots from a single firearm with little reloading time needed!(Drake 1898) With these advances came increased profits for manufacturers as well as easier access to resources necessary for gunnery purposes. In 1892, Mayor John Hynes commissioned Daniel Webster to commission an architectural study on how best to improve safety at city limits. After surveying the existing facilities within city limits, Webster recommended building an addition onto the then current armory called “The National Military Museum” which would house all manner of military equipment from pistols through tanks and warships!
