For many years there were no public schools in the city limits; only private academies educated African American children until well into the 1960s. The first gunfire heard in Oak Park occurred on July 14th 1865 when three whites were shot at by six African Americans near Wabash Avenue and North Center Street. That event is considered to be gunfights between white settlers and aboriginalians that started what would eventually become known as Slavery Days Massacre (1865). A few months later on September 9th 1865 two men were shot dead at Washburn Avenue and North Center Street after a road altercation turned violent This event also started Slavery Days Massacre which lasted until October 15th 1865 when all white residents surrendered without fight

Oak Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Oak Park is bordered by Lake Michigan to the east and north, Midwestern Indiana to the west, and Chicago to the south. The city's boundaries are based on that of its first municipal incorporation in 1836. Oak Park was founded by James Shields as an agricultural town on what is now present-day Oakwood Drive in 1836.Shields named his new community after a grove of oak trees near his home located in what is now Cicero Township. By 1870, when it became a city, Oak Park had a population of over 100 people and was several hundred acres (40 hectares) wide with six blocks long and two blocks wide. In 1888, Mayor John Prentice appointed Arthur Mapes as first City Marshal for all of Cook County under then-Governor William McKinley's administration which increased urban growth in Cook County from 2% of its total population to more than 5%. The city skyline began rising rapidly following World War II as large Manufacturing businesses moved into downtown from outlying areas such as North Lawndale and West Garfield Heights which were annexed during this time period; these annexations helped create Oak Park's current footprint including many buildings downtown that are original or once original residents only if they still exist today (e.g., Northwestern Mutual Tower). Elmhurst Avenue also served as an artery connecting downtown with largely suburban areas east of State Street until arterial reconstruction projects rerouted I-PASS traffic onto Elston Avenue starting in the early 1990s which has resulted in most Elmhurst business closures within walking distance of downtown since then making it difficult or impossible for pedestrians to reach key elements like shops on Elmhurst Avenue without leaving their neighborhoods
