The first written mention of oak trees in Illinois comes from 1812 when Nicholas Brown mentioned them in his journal as being near Mount Prospect on the border between Cook County and Kane County. Oak Park was platted in 1847 by John Wirt, a banker and politician who served as Mayor of Chicago from 1851 to 1861. Wirt's map shows that he named an alley east of Clark Avenue after General James Kasky, who had helped him build up his business empire during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The first settlers were Germans who arrived around 1800 along with other immigrants such as Catholics and Jews fleeing religious persecution in Europe. By 1800, there were over 100 German families living in Oak Park according to Census records. Most early settlers worked on farms but some bought property elsewhere within the city limits or founded businesses downtown including a brewery, tannery, bakery, cigar store and livery stable all before 1830s according to George Lusk's history book "The People Of Chicago" A fire destroyed three buildings on Dearborn Street in downtown OakPark on December 3rd 1868 while several people were playing inside overnight; this event is generally cited as starting the current trend towards using artificial lighting indoors instead of candles or kerosene lamps which continued until about 1925 In 1865 two brothers started a grocery store at Hecht & McDermott Streets east of Milwaukee Avenue just south of Cicero Avenue called The Germania Store - today it still stands next door to its original building . This was followed by another grocery store at 116th Street and South Archer Road built by Fenton Brothers which still stands today . All these stores are documented through deeds filed with Clerk Of Records . One can assume that these stores were very popular because they sold groceries at low prices relative to other businesses operating at that time In 1886 Jnoe Eller opened an ice cream parlor called Eagle Creamery on State Street just north (west)of present day Racine Avenue It became quite successful so much so that it moved out into its own building (now part of Pritzker Pavilion) around 1915 Anheuser Busch bought Eagle Creamery for $2 million circa 1945 After World War II many small businesses closed down due various factors OCAD Businesses Inc., owner/operator since 1978 provides nightancovery services for restaurants/bars located within their boundaries

The immigrants founded large businesses and many churches in what would become one of Chicago's most diverse neighborhoods: streets are named for both North Americans who lived here during those years—men such as Stephen Wessels (founderof Northwestern University) and Julius Rosenwald (founderof Sears Roebuck)—and international newcomers such as Pierre Teilhard d'Oeuvre and Ernest Hemingway. During World War II much activity took place within or around nearby Douglas Aircraft Plant No. 3 on State Street; some 2 million pounds sterling worth of metal was produced there between 1942–1945 alone. One resident summed up wartime life inOak Park this way: "It wasn't 'bad,' just different...Some things you just don't remember because they happened so fast." The plant closed down following the war but has since been reborn as Appleton Place Mall which anchors Douglas Rd.–just east of downtown on State St., across from Millennium College SOUTH Campus! This redevelopment has helped revive some old buildings along with modern shopping amenities like Macy's(!!!!) that has made it possible for people living near Loop 12th St./State St.–to experience all that Douglas Rd./Appleton Place Mall has to offer without having TO GO anywhere!" Oak Park was founded on a farm in 1812 by William and Anna Oak. The town was named for the oak trees that lined the streets. In 1838, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill creating a township in Cook County. The township was divided into two parts, one called Oak Park and the other called Hawthorne. Hawthorne became the new name for Oak Park after it annexed part of neighboring West Side Township in 1851.
