From this purchase came the name "Oak Park" which stuck around through various changes until it took its current form about 1850 when John Pemberton donated land to build a schoolhouse and church on Lincoln Road between Keystone Avenue and Wilson Road/Route 59 (now Central Ave.). This move helped solidify white settlement in what would become Elmhurst Township east of Chicago while also creating competition for black settlement west of Chicago given that Pemberton had donated all but one acre (2 ha) of his property to be used as a public school district rather than sold outright to blacks as many other landowners had done. By 1860, there were 10 families living in "Oak Park," nine of which were African American slaves owned by their owners within Elmhurst Township or nearby Crystal Lake Village although some slaveowners lived outside these municipalities altogether including one individual who livee'd north of lake shoreline along I-290 between Schaumburg Rd./I-294 and Clinton Rd./I-88 before eventually selling their slaves to settle east side Chicago where they prospered until 1865 when Union troops burned down their homes during an occupation raid during the Civil War era . One such family owner lost everything they owned during this time including their home located just outside present day Elmhurst Township boundary line on I-290 just south of Schaumburg Rd./I-294 before finally settling west sideChicago some 25 years later where they continue to reside today among others In 1857, Oak Park became an incorporated municipality with a population of 714 when it merged with neighboring South Elgin to form what is now known as Oak Park-South Elgin Township . Many residents have played important roles within our local government over time including Mayor George Fenton from 1951 - 1959; Treasurer John Dorman from 1961 - 1965; Councilman Leroy Bolton from 1967 - 1974; Councilwoman Barbara Byrd from 1975 - 1981; Treasurer Don Trimble from 1982 - 1986; Mayor Tom Barrett from 1987 - 1990; Clerk Jerry Spriggs since 1991 . Our mayor has served consecutively since 2003 after previously serving two terms concurrent with then Mayor Richard Moseley . Oak Park is one of Chicago's older villages and has been part of the city since its incorporation in 1847. It straddles the border of Cook and Kane counties. The Village of Oak Park was formed on October 1, 1848 from land grant from the government of Illinois to Revolutionary War veteran Major John Kinzie. A school was opened in 1849, but closed two years later due to financial difficulties. In 1860, oak park Golf Course was built east of town on what is now State Road 29A.
