Oak Park, Illinois is a city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 153,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Park was founded on October 5, 1837 by John S. Yates and his brother Amos as a small town in what is now Kane County. When the Canadian Pacific Railway built its line through the area in 1854, Yates donated land to make way for it and other railroad projects. In 1872, Oak Park became an incorporated city and adopted a new name: Chicago Heights. The City of Chicago annexed Oak Park on November 3rd, 1901 making it one municipality within the larger city limits. On December 8th of that year Charles J. Hennigan was sworn into office as Mayor of Chicago Heights withoak park as his home turf .Mayor Hennigan quickly began to modernize the community including developing parks and enlarging the water supply which later made Oak Park one of Chi-Town's most luxurious communities . The population increased rapidly during World War II due to wartime demand for housing and businesses throughout Greater Chicago ; however when war operations ended there were no new development opportunities until after Korean War when downtown Chi-Town started to gentrify again

Oak Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. The Oak Park–Grayson Community School District serves the town. The townsite of Oak Park was laid out in 1847 by General David Dixon and named for an oak tree that stands on the north side of the current town center. Dixon established a post office in what is now Oak Park and named it after his home state of Illinois. The first settlers arrived in 1848 and built log cabins near present day Cherry Creek Road and First Street. By 1850, they had erected frame buildings on what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Northwest Side Drive. In 1851, they organized as a village under the name of Grayslake with a meetinghouse, schoolhouse, storehouse, blacksmith shop and farm buildings at Niles Corners In 1870, voters passed a $100 bond issue to build roads into their community which would make it possible for residents to do business together without fear of robbery or vandalism from other villagers. This type of civic engagement is chronicled by historian Joel Kotkin who writes "it marked one step closer to developing into one unified entity." 2 years later another $100 bond issue was passed for construction of schools including one for girls which became known as Elmhurst Female Seminary (later Elmhurst College). A new brick courthouse replaced the previous grime-covered structure located on North Side Drive east of present day First Street.. The Village embarked upon its 'Golden Age' during this time with many annexations including: Grayslake Heights in 1902; Deerfield Beach in 1915; Lombard Heights annexed by Oak Park in 1922; Willowbrook annexation followed by Winnetka Township in 1925". The Village's heyday came to an end due to World War II when all but two buildings were destroyed or converted into housing units or military facilities. Postwar growth slowed until the early 1960s when some new annexations occurred such as Addison Hills in 1966; Groveland Heights annexation followed by Arlington Heights in 1969; Maywood Annexation following Rockridge Township’s merger with Skokie on Jan 1st 1972). These additions increased total population from 20,000 to 30,000 within ten years providing more space for students along with additional retail businesses . . . During this time period there also began efforts to unite various villages through amalgamation efforts such as Westchester County (New York), Kankakee County (IL), Will County (IL) etc ..... However these plans never panned out because each village felt different enough from its neighbor not to want unification so instead these communities continued separately building their own unique identities." The decline of village life can be linked back to several factors including changes brought about by social media which affected communication within villages as well as transportation options becoming available outside those villages making it difficult for residents to commute between them often resulting in low voter turnout rates among electors living inside their respective villages - leading eventually to decline over time while technology has allowedResidents within remote villages like Deerfield Beach & Lombard Heights access 2 hour commutes+subway fare
Oak Park was founded in 1834 by John H. Emerson and his wife, Lydia Ann Emerson. The city was named for the oak tree that grew near their farmstead. The Elmwood Cemetery is located within the boundaries of Oak Park.
