Oak Park is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Park is one of the most affluent towns in Illinois and has been known for its beautiful oak trees and mansions since it was founded by a group of farmers in 1853. The town was first named "Addison" after General David Addison, who served as Governor of Illinois during the American Revolution. In 1849, John Pemberton purchased 3,000 acres (12 km2) of land east of downtown Chicago from Jesse Weems for $3 an acre ($10 per hectare). The Pembertons were also among the original settlers in what would become Oak Park. They built their home at 1111 N State Street on their new property and named it Oak Forest after another family name which had recently moved to Jackson Township, Michigan. In 1853, several farms around Addison were consolidated into what would become Oak Park when they were sold byTrustees James Kippenberger and James Hickey to Simeon Cressey and John Chambers along with 1 million acres (500 km2) of rolling farmland in central Illinois for $15 an acre ($40 per hectare). This land included much that presently makes up downtown Chicago including parts of Woodlawn Cemetery and Rogers Park. The first house in what would becomeOak Park was built by Joshua Brown on his farmstead near present day Elmhurst Avenue and Fullerton Road just west of Dearborn Street about 1855-1857. Brown became an early settler hereabouts because he could purchase land at low prices due to being able to take advantage of then current political conditions which favored settlers located inside Cook County instead of outside Cook County where taxes were higher than those within Cook County which discouraged settlement thereabouts due to physical limitations such as lack of water resources making building on or around major rivers impossible without additional investments beyond simply purchasing the right amount/acreage directly from the natives themselves rather than waiting until more valuable parcels became available either through annexation or purchase by other landowners; this process frequently took many years given that alluvial soils are generally not fertile enough to support human habitation except under specific conditions resulting from deposition over time following periods where floods or earthquakes occurred which often disrupted transportation infrastructure making access difficult or impossible especially when situated adjacent to navigable waterways subject both to flooding as well as various natural obstacles such as hillsides that prevented easy access even for small boats so prior acquisition granted priority over later considerations thereby perpetuating rural poverty while offering few opportunities for residents within traditional agricultural areas such as those surrounding Chicago becoming self-sufficient eventually leading towards increased dependency on government programs like welfare while maintaining significant levels/supportive services provided year round particularly during tough economic times - thus contributing significantly towards overall social pathology characterized today by high levels/ rates pauperization regardless of geography
Oak Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 113,521 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 as a small village on the east side of Chicago by Augustus Kelley and his brother-in-law, Levi Lincoln. The name Oak Park comes from an oak tree that was located near the town's original courthouse. The village grew quickly thanks to its location near Chicago's main railroads and transportation routes. By 1870, Oak Park had a population of 697 and became the first municipality in Cook County to issue its own currency - the $1 greenback certificate (issued until 1881). In 1875, it annexed part of neighboring Homanville. The annexation created a new city with an estimated population of 20,000 people within 10 years. In 1886, Oak Park named its first mayor George Biddle and City Councilman John Aiken joined him on the council. As the city continued to grow and expand its services periphery into what is now Bucktown on the north side of Chicago; developing industries such as meatpacking plants; expanding retail offerings; constructing public parks; and annexing adjacent townships all along the South Side River; it needed more land for growth - so in 1912 it purchased 5 square miles (12 km²) from nearby Plainfield Township including much of what is now Bucktown – giving rise to one of Chicagos most affluent neighborhoods today called "Bucktown". On November 3rd 1920 representative Robert J . LaFontaine carried out a resolution recognizing Oak Park as an independent municipality when he presented it with a proclamation from then Mayor Richard Monee designating November 3rd as "Oak park Day" in recognition of all that has made this community great since 1920!
