The first people to inhabit what is now Oak Park were the Potawatomi Indians who lived along the Fox River during the early 18th century. They used oak trees for shelter and cooking fires and left their marks on many aspects of today's community including its churches and schools. After several years of intermittent contact with white men, all activity ceased around 1800 when federal troops burned down some aboriginal villages near Lake Michigan. Spain established a mission here in 1795 while seeking to establish control over this area following its War for Independence against France; both countries claimed these parts of what are now Illinois. Spanish missionaries helped build much of present day downtown Chicago before being replaced by French Jesuits about 1800-1802 following their expulsion from Canada due to religious persecution there also. In 1813 Spain ceded this territory - including part of oak park - to Great Britain as part of the Treaty Of Ghent which ended war between France and England; this event helped seal off most major American borders at that time. In 1836 Orville Wirtz purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) northward along Hwy 111 from James Buchanan Stone for $2 per acre (0·86 ha). This location would become one of America's earliest commercial subdivisions – becoming nucleus around which other businesses grew thanks to Wirtz's deep pockets and innovative business practices such as offering mortgages through agents instead of going through brokers like others did at that time. By 1840 Wirtz had erected 5 buildings: 3 shops plus an office building on Clinton Street across from his home – this neighborhood later became known as “Clinton Square” due to its proximity thereto (see map below). From here Wirtz ran a huge varietyransportation network effecting profound changes not only within but also throughout Chicagoland throughout much OF THE 20TH CENTURY! Today we still enjoy occasional visits by pioneers John F Kennedy or even more recent President Barack Obama! O Pioneers!!! In 1847 Mr & Mrs A N Webster bought 1/4 mile (1 km) southward along Hwy 111 from James Buchanan Stone for $8 per acre (.93 ha). Atop Clarendon Hill they built 2 fine residences: One called "Glen Ellyn" still standing & recently restored (& beautifully furnished), & another called "Norman Rockwell" nearly destroyed but fortunately preserved (& beautifully furnished), bothnow part Of Our National Historic Landmark program!
