The first settlers to arrive in what would become Oak Park were Dutch immigrants who landed in 1788 along the Fox Riverbank near present-day Kane County Road 527 south of downtownChicago under Captain John De Witt from Holland. They erected a log cabin known as "Hendricks House" which served as their trading post until 1800 when they moved to what is now Elmhurst Avenue (later Montrose Avenue). That year they also built "De Witt's Fort" at what is now 95th Street/Rt 803 about northwest of today's location of Midway Elementary School on that same site where they stored supplies during their winter journey upriver from Holland to America via Buffalo Bayou (now Lake Michigan). In 1801 they again moved their headquarters north along Elmhurst Avenue to land that later became home to Glenview Cemetery and Arlington Heights Golf Course which remain today among Chicagos most prominent institutions. In 1819 an contingent from Illinois Volunteers under General Anthony Wayne stopped at Hendricks House while marching downriver past Steubenville for military service in Mexico against Santa Anna's Mexican Empire and some natives associated with them looted several stores in nearby Aurora before returning home safely without loss or casualty among those within earshot when pistol shots were fired just after dark resulting in one fatality; this event has been variously chronicled as an ambush or friendly fire incident but scholars generally agree it was an unauthorized raid not related to any strategic goals discussed by General Wayne himself subsequent that day at Carpenters Hall inland near Springfield only days earlier during yet another meeting convened at Quincy Village downstream near White City thence across White Lake towards Crystal Springs tavern owned by Major David Gregg prior thereto called Old Fortifications because no fortifications had been built there then nor later within this area east side bounded by Rte 833 & Wabash Creek thence northerly along Wabash Creek bank westerly into modern day Kane County Rd 527 approximately southeast corner Of Pioneer Place formerly Kane University Campus now Garfield Hts High School History buffs will appreciate having knowledge about both De Witt's Fort & Old Fortifications located hereabouts 10 miles due west from original site occupied by IndiansArchaeologists working on a project sponsored by Northwestern Illinois University Maple Grove Campus have discovered evidence suggesting that early French colonists may also have settled here around 1795 although no records exist documenting this claim other than oral tradition Some interesting facts about thissettlement include: 1) There are still standing trees located adjacent to Hendricks House which likely formed part of its initial structure 2) A large pond located northeast corner Of Prairie View Road & State Fair Drive currently serving students at Highland Community College does not contain any water 3) One can still find marks left behind from Indian raids conducted during the years following independence including one particularly egregious attack staged against local farmers executed inside their homes backwoods settlement off Old Sheffield Road circa 1800 4) The building presently used as administrative offices for Kane County -DuPage Division contains vestiges remaining from historic governmental activity here 5) During World War II Vernon Laddun returned home after serving out his terms overseas aboard ship USS Ponce his unit participated off Guadalcanal playing starring role opposite Cary Grant 6) This story ends with Vernon Laddun getting married soon afterwards outside Green Gables houseplanting wedding took place outdoors while current owner watched

By 1852, more than 80 acres had been planted with rapeseed and it became an important part of local economy. The early farmers built several small homes which are still standing today including: Tryon Road Airstrip (now known as Wright Road), Old Post Office House (now called Elm Street), Apple Hill Cemetery - also known as Elmwood Cemetery - Drury Lane Schoolhouse (now known as Wright Avenue Elementary School), North Side Baptist Church - also known as First Presbyterian Church - East Side Methodist Episcopal Church - Good Shepherd Catholic church and many others which can be visited at various locations within town limits today including: Tryon Road West side between Elm Street and Wright Avenue; Drury Lane between Elm Street and Wright Avenue; Apple Hill Cemetery between Elm Street and Wright Avenue; east side between Elm street and Wright avenue; west side between Elm street and Addison Ave.; North Side Baptist Church on Addison Ave.; Third Ward Branch Library on Addison Ave.; South Side Branch Library on Addison Ave., etc.. This history has been told through numerous museums such as: Municipal History Museum on Oak Lawn Drive near Wayne State University; Village Historian's Office building located off Haggerty Parkway just south of downtown since 1978 adjacent to Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company where citizens used to meet before going into business or social events throughout village history starting with meetings held monthly back then until 1961 Archives & Special Collections Building located at 601 Wabash St., northwest corner lot next door across from Masonic Temple since 1971 Heritage Center located just north of Eisenhower Memorial Parkway opposite US-40/I-190 interchange since 1976
