The first gun target in Oak Park was called the “Old Marksman”. It was located on the intersection of W. 79th and State Streets. The Buena Vista rifle company, which belonged to George Washington Carver, used this target for training purposes from 1853-1856. The Old Marksman was also used by the Chicago Rifle company during the Black Hawk War in 1868. In 1907, a new target called the “Sparrow” was created at a cost of $1,000. This target had a revolving barrel that could be adjusted to give shooters different patterns of fire. In 1929, another new target called the “Tiger” was added to the list of targets in Oak Park. This target weighed 1,500 pounds and could be moved around easily so that shooters could shoot multiple rounds at it at once. In 1940, an even newer target called the “Bulldog” became available in Oak Park. This target weighed 2,500 pounds and had a moving platform that allowed shooters to hit multiple targets at once with ease. After World War II ended, many of these old guns were sold off and not used anymore until they were donated or given away to other organizations such as schools or community centers. Oak Park, Illinois is a city in the United States. It was founded in 1847 by John Jacob Astor and his wife, Helen of Troy. The population was 97,816 at the 2010 census. Oak Park is a suburb of Chicago. The first European to visit what is now Oak Park was the French explorer-captain Jean La Salle on July 8, 1779. He named it Pointe aux Herbes after a nearby herb field. La Salle's map of 1780 does not mention any such place as "Oak Park." However, one source claims that La Salle may have been referring to a small current town on the east side of Lake Michigan called Appleton which he had sighted while exploring that area. John Jacob Astor and his wife Helen were among the early settlers in what is now Oak Park. They arrived from New York in 1817 and started out farmsteading near where they would eventually build their large home on Rt 54th Street today known as Astor Drive. By 1830 they had moved to an even larger farmstead on present day Forest Road (now Elmhurst) just northwest of downtown Chicago where they raised their family for over seventy years until their death in 1903 at the age of 101 years old. As early as 1840, there were reports of people living along what is now Elmhurst Avenue north of Rt 54th Street because investors wanted to buy land for streetcar construction between downtown Chicago and Highland Park which lay south of what are now Elmhurst Avenue and Cicero Avenue (then called state routes 35/36). In 1845 John Jacob Astor bought 640 acres adjacent to present day Forest Road for $1 million dollars making him one of the richest men in America at that time or up until then! Oak Park is a small town in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 20,093 at the 2010 census. Oak Park is located on the border of Cook County and Kane County. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south, Westchester County to the east, and Fox Valley to the north. The village was platted in 1847 as a result of a land grant from President James K. Polk. It became an incorporated municipality in 1881. The name "Oak Park" comes from an oak tree that stood near where it now stands on State Street. A post office called Oak Park was established in 1847, and remained in operation until 1893. The first settler in what would become Oak Park was Isaac McCoy who arrived with his family in 1848 from Tennessee. McCoy laid out a home on what is now Wacker Drive which he named Walnut Grove after his walnut trees that grew thereabouts. In 1850, Drury & Company began operations as a general store and restaurant on Elmwood Avenue between Wacker Drive and State Street NW (now Chicago Avenue). This business operated for 62 years before being sold to John Hutton who renamed it Joplin House later that year; this business also operated for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1957. At this time, Joplin House became known as The Old Gilded Cage Theatre which still exists today within walking distance of downtown Chicago! In 1901, two brothers - Harry Fenton Sr., Harry Fenton Jr., Chas Scudder - purchased 8 acres (2 ha) east of present-day Maple Road NE for $4 per acre (1/2 hectare). Here they erected a large frame house which served as their residence until their death in 1942; afterwards it served as both a country club and social hall through most of its history!
