The settlement that grew up around Sennett's purchase was named after him – oak park – because many oaks were found nearby. When Congress created new townships within Cook County on December 12, 1836, oak park became part of Addison Township; however, it continued to be known as "Sennett's Town". On August 16, 1840 – just over one year after its incorporation as a town – oak park voted to change its name to Chicago when incorporation into Chicago occurred with full local government following November 8th ballot results. The vote followed an ordinance passed by the school board that read: "that all changes hereafter made in any municipal records or accounts connected with said town [OakPark] shall be referred to and approved by a majorityvote of all officers thereof." In 1865 Mayor George Wesselt proposed that all businesses located within ten blocks (19 km²) of City Hall should move their operations out into the then unincorporated areas called North Side or South Side because they had become congested in downtownChicago during late 19th century when only wealthy people could afford large properties there outside Loop Business Districts . This proposal led to what are now Milwaukee Street and State Street being developed into commercial corridors today known collectively as Near West Side .
