Oak Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 29,898 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the Northwest Side of Chicago. Oak Park was founded in 1847 as a small settlement on the wild west side of what is now Midwestern Chicago. The first settler in what would become Oak Park was James Crain. In 1865, Captain George Pullen became known for his victory over General Winfield Scott at Battle of Aurora Heights in Douglas County, Kansas. On October 3rd 1870 James Smeaton organized an armed force to repel Kipling's Sioux Indians from assimilating into mainstream society and raiding villages along the Fox River near downtown Oak Park. On October 11th 1870 Captain Pullen's body was found with gunshot wounds inside his home east of town after being attacked by some Dakota Sioux who thought he had betrayed them during their fight against General Scott's forces. This event led to increased security around downtown Oak Park and also raised awareness about Native American ancestry in general and among European Americans in particular. In 1892 John Fenton began construction on what would become Liberty Hill Cemetery which served as a burial ground for many notable people including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S Grant, Woodrow Wilson and others who passed through Chicago during their lifetimes or were buried there after death. In 1905 Wm Ewart Gray donated land adjacent to his home on North State Street for what would become Northwestern University; this donation forever changed Northwestern Illinois University (now Northwestern Illinois University–Chicago) into one of America's most renowned universities with campuses throughout the Midwest and beyond- something that can still be seen today when one drives down Lawndale Avenue towards campus). In 1912 Charles Sprague opened Sprague’s department store at 444 N Dearborn Street (later renamed Macy’s department store), which quickly became one of Chicagos largest retailers with more than 12 stores across Chicagos five wards/ districts (the Loop). The 1920s saw growth in school enrollment thanks to programs such as Grades 1-12 offered by Cook County schools starting in 1923 followed by high school education offered statewide beginning that year; all without any Taxation until 1933 when School District 5A merged into Cook County government creating a single Taxpayer managed school district named “Cook Township High School District 7A” – making Oak Park officially a City! During World War II munitions manufacturing occurred at nearby Rockford Army Ammunition Plant where millions rounds were created for both Nazi Germany and Japan including projectiles used against Pearl Harbor resulting in significant civilian casualties both withinOak park itself as well as surrounding communities due to unexploded ordnance present throughout much of northwest suburban Cook County . After World War II most industry left rockford but new businesses grew up such as Weisbrodt’s Department Store which closed its doors permanently following several years vacancy but reopened under new ownership later that decade becoming one of Chicagos few remaining Sears stores before finally closing its doors again sometime between 2009-2013.; making it only the second Sears store ever owned & operated by an African American once it opened its doors back up inside Elmhurst Mall!
