Oak Park was founded in 1836 by George Washington Oak and his wife, Sarah. The town rapidly grew and by 1840 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1847, the legislature passed a bill granting voting rights to all citizens of Illinois. The following year, Oak Park became the first township in Cook County. By 1870, the population had reached 5,000 residents and the township had a school system with 13 schools. In 1887, Oak Park incorporated as a village and changed its name to Chicago. However, due to its proximity to other municipalities in Cook County and concerns about being overshadowed by the city center of Chicago, Oak Park reverted back to its original name in 1908. Among other changes during this time were the establishment of a park system that includes present-day Elmhurst and Addison streets; creation of an agricultural area that included land now within Midtown Southside; and construction of numerous high-rise buildings including One Franklin Street (now Michigan Avenue), 711 North Dearborn Street (now Wacker Drive), 11 West Pierce Street (now Randolph Road) and 299 North Wabash Avenue (now LaSalle Street). The 21st century has seen some significant changes with respect to development within the town limits: since 2007 there have been several high profile gentrification projects taking place which have led to increased commercial activity on small blocks surrounding Elmhurst Road; new housing developments are also being constructed on both sides of State Route 90 adjacent to Midtown Southside; as well as major redevelopment plans for downtown which should result in further growth throughout much of the community over the next few years
Oak Park was founded in 1814 by James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy. The town was named for a grove of oak trees that once stood near the present-day downtown area. The name originated from an Indian word meaning "place where the water flows." On July 10, 1816, President James K. Polk issued a proclamation creating the city of Chicago on the southern edge of Cook County. Oak Park followed suit on October 1, 1816. Chicago's first mayor was John Paulding. The Illinois Central Railroad arrived in Oak Park in 1872 and served as its primary transportation artery until it merged with the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha in 1949. The major employers in Oak Park during its early years were grocery stores and meatpacking plants; however, over time other businesses have come to dominate the local economy, including banking and professional services.
