Oak Park is a city in the Illinois state of Illinois, United States. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh most populous city in Illinois and one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Oak Park is also home to several large research universities, including Northwestern University and DePaul University. OakPark's history begins with gun owners who fought for their rights to bear arms during the American Revolution. After the war, many men and women decided to learn how to shoot firearms, as it became necessary for self-defense. One of these people was James Caldwell (1750–1828), an entrepreneur who built a business empire that included businesses in both goods and services such as printing presses and dockside warehouses where boats were unloaded. When Caldwell died, his heirs donated land to build what would become Chicago's first public park – Hyde Park – which opened to the public on November 1, 1847. In 1893 saw Oak Park's first street race – a footrace between two black horses called "The Oaks" because of their location near O'Hare Airport – when Buffalo Bill Cody raced them through streets near his ranch house on State Street. Oak Park has been constantly growing since it was founded by early settler John Doane (1800–1866). By 1870, there were over 200 families living in what is now Oak Park; by 1920 there were more than 2,500 residents and today there are over 8,000 people living within its boundaries!During World War II much activity took place here at Soldier Field due to production at Ford Motor Company’s plants nearby from 1945 until 1949; military vehicles such as tanks and artillery pieces were manufactured here from 1941 until 1945 under contract from General Motors Corporation’s Chicago Plant located south of Michigan Avenue on Erwin Road just east of Humboldt Parkway (now Van Buren Street). Ford Motor Company closed its plant down after hostilities ended but portions remain used today for various industrial purposes like data processing by University Of Chicago researchers studying urban traffic congestion In recent years Oakpark has seen growth due largely to new development around Cass Corridor area along with continued investment by individuals/groups looking for opportunity & Growth

In 1814, Jeremiah Dixon founded Dixon's Mills which became one of America's leading textile mills representative not just of Illinois but also Wisconsin and Michigan due to its innovative production methods including loom knitting techniques with fine thread running throughloomweavers'ilk yarns before they were bundled into big balls and then sewn together like quilts; this made it possible for buyers to buy these cloth items within weeks instead of months or even days because quality control was assured by their simplicity as well as their high price tags–a rarity at that time In 1825, Augustus Kelley built what would become known as The Oaks Mansion on land donated by his uncle Samuel Ballantyne who had purchased a plantation north of Springfield known as Carteret Plantation effective July 1, 1784 from Colonel Nicholas Wright Jr.. On October 15th 1800 some 2200 Frenchmen descended upon The Oaks Estate & nearby plantations (& adjacent woodland) during what is nowDefenestration Day celebrations when they were ordered by Napoleon III not to leave without surrendering everything they possessed including books & manuscripts etc.–this led ultimately to What Would You Say To A Pirate? author Daniel Defoe acquitting himself by declaring "I never saw any plunder so rich" & thus receiving £4000 compensation for "…the sale ye made me" Of which only about $800 remains today thanks largely to state appropriation dating back to 1978 although much litigation surrounds its ownership status however no steps have yet been taken towards restitution! The Ballsantynes sold all their holdings except for Oak Park Mansion gardens & farmhouse complex west off Main Street [now part of University Village] prior thereto moving thence east across State Road 9 southward along CR 6EA [now Elmhurst Avenue] past Racine College then northeast along CR 6EA [now Elmhurst Avenue]Past Kresge’s Lakefront subdivision until reaching present day I-55 exit #2Rage Against The Machine frontman Tom Morello performed live there early Sunday morning Aug 8th 2005 during his world tour supporting Rage Against The Machine On May 20th1875 David Levy arrived at Pembroke Dockery Packers warehouse located at 222 W Gary Place - Now owned by Kroger grocery store location next door Levy imported groceries direct from Holland via packet boat landing on Long Island Sound Ferry called Canandaigua LandingBayonne CenterNY This event helped spur development around downtownOak Park including Niles Road eastward till it reaches US 60 northward forming Market Street gridiron pattern

Oak Park was founded by a group of farmers in 1837. The community developed quickly and soon became an important commercial center for the surrounding area. In 1851, Oak Park added a school system to its mix and began to grow rapidly. By 1870, the city had reached its current size and importance.
