Oak Park, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1847 by the brothers Isaac and Samuel Oak. The population of Oak Park was 996 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to what is now Oak Park were farmers who came from Massachusetts. They started out farming corn and beans but soon realized that they needed to grow something more valuable so they began planting oak trees. The Oaks grew these trees and became famous for their produce which sold well throughout the Midwest. The Oaks also built a few homes in what is now Oak Park. By 1900, the population of Oak Park had increased to 1,100 people and it remained this way until 1925 when it peaked at 1,500 people. In 1925, the Chicagoans decided that they no longer wanted their share of the county and divided it into two parts - one part went to Humboldt Park while the rest went to Oak park. This caused a big problem for the Oaks as their home in Humboldt Park was already being used by other residents so they had to find another place to live. However, since their home was still standing they decided not to sell it and instead continued growing food for local consumption until 1956 when an outbreak of bubonic plague made living in city centres necessary again. In response, the Oaks donated all their crops grown between 1847-1956 to help with famine relief efforts across Europe during World War II (they also hosted a chili cook-off). Oak Park was founded in 1836 by John and Maria Payne as a small rural village on the banks of the Illinois River. The name “Oak Park” is derived from an old Indian word meaning “place where the oak trees grow,” and it stuck. The Payne family farmstead remained in operation until 1872, when they sold it to George C. Marshall. In 1912, Oak Park became a city under the jurisdiction of Chicago.
