The town was named for an oak tree that stood near the original site of present-day Oak Park. The first post office was established in 1814, and by 1827 it had become one of the largest towns in Cook County. In 1847, a railroad line was built through what is now Oak Park and it became a part of Chicago. AlthoughOak Park never achieved great commercial or industrial success as Chicago grew larger and more diverse, its residents have made significant contributions to both their community and Chicagoland as a whole over the years. One important aspect of Oak Park’s history has been its role as an educational center for southern Illinoisans during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Beginning with John Henthorn’s establishment of Northwestern University (now Northwestern Michigan University) here in 1892, many prominent educators came from this region to teach at various colleges and universities throughout northern Illinois. This legacy continues to this day with programs such as Northern Illinois University’s Department of Education which offers courses leading up to certification as public school teachers; or DePaul University’s College of Education which offers training for elementary/middle school principals across all 50 states and Washington D.C.). Another important facet of Oak Park’s past has been its activism: since World War II nearly every elected official from northland (the portion east of Lake Michigan including much of downtown Chicago) has come from here – whether it be mayor or state legislators or even county commissioners!

After two years of study at the University of Montreal, he became a research associate at the Natural Sciences and Technology section of the Bureau des Beaux-Arts in 1885. He developed an interest in photochromic photography, and began working on his own photographic processes. In 1888, he met photographer Émile Bernard, who helped him start a photographic cooperative in Montreal. Carrel's process used blue dyes to create a transparency that could be exposed to light and then developed using a simple development step. This allowed him to produce high-quality prints without expensive equipment or chemicals. In 1896, Carrel founded the Société française de Photographie (SFP), which became one of the most important photojournalism organizations in Europe.
Oak Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,781 at the 2010 census. Oak Park is the second largest city in Cook County after Chicago. It is bordered by the communities of River Grove to the north, West Loop to the east, and Lincolnwood to the south. The first settler in what would become Oak Park was John Witherspoon who came overland from Scotland in 1821. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and named it Witherspoon's Bluff after himself and his father-in-law John Ratcliffe (1793–1868). Witherspoon's cabin later housed a school for children which he also funded. In 1833, Aaron Burr had a wagon wheel painted "Walking on Water" near present day Union Station and gave it to Mrs. Burr as a gift; this became known as Burr Wheel Drive Boulevard today. In 1837, George Hennepin bought 280 acres (120 ha) of land west of downtown for $1 million dollars from David Dixon & Company of Chicago with intentions of developing it into farmland or an urban area called "Hennepin Heights". However no significant development occurred until after World War II when Main Street was widened and new housing developments were built along its centerline while parkland spread out around it to provide natural open space for pedestrians and bicyclists%. In 1911, Jesse Owens won an Olympic gold medal in track events participation at Oak Park High School stadium then home of sports rival Chicago Latin High School before going on to attend Tuskegee University where he earned his Bachelors degree in 1944 but decided not pursue further education because he believed that white America had let him down during World War II . After returning home he started his own business making enamelware before moving back east full time in 1961 where he currently resides with his wife Beverly now 89 years old and has been living there since they moved there together from Flint Michigan circa 1915 when they both attended Oak Park Southwestern Elementary School
