The name "Oak Park" originated with a Native American word meaning "the place where trees grow." In 1868, an act of the General Assembly designated part of present day Oak Park as a Home Rule Township which allowed for more local control over its affairs than had been granted to other townships within Cook County. This led to further development of the city with numerous small businesses starting up along Grand Boulevard east of State Street. In 1912, Mayor Amos Staley dedicated what is now Elmhurst Avenue to commemorate Chicago's first African American mayor—John Fenton—and Governor Francis Waring's visit to Chicago that year. During World War II, many military barracks were built in or near Oak Park and it became known as "The Arsenal". After the war ended, many jobs were lost during the economic recession that followed which caused many residents to move out of Oak Park into neighboring suburbs. However, recent downtown redevelopment has helped bring back much needed business activity and people have returned to live within walking distance of their homes again. Today, Oak Park stands as one of America’s wealthiest cities with median home values standing at $225,000 (2009). The phrase originated from an article written about Oak Park in "Life" magazine in 1922 entitled "The Most Beautiful Town In America."
