Oak Park, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. Oak Park comprises the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Oak Park is located east of downtown Chicago and north of the city's limits on the Northwest Side. It was founded in 1833 by General John C. Frémont as a small hamlet on oak trees near what is now Wicker Park and Dearborn Street. In 1835, it became part of Princeton Township when that township was organized from parts of Evanston Township and North Lawndale Township. The first post office in Oak Park was established in 1838; it closed in 1847. The first store opened in 1840 and was operated by John J. Pappas until his death in 1862. A gristmill erected about 1840 served as the nucleus for present-day Grinding Mill No. 1 which began operation in 1886 and continues to produce flour, cornmeal, oats, barley, whole wheat flour, pasta doughs and other products today under its original name of Abraham Lincoln Mills Incorporated (ALM). In 1850–1851 Congress passed an act legislation creating seven townships within Cook County: Princeton (northwest side), Lawndale (southwest side), Westchester (northwest side), Ravenswood (east side), Evergreen Heights (southside), and Humboldt ( southeast side). All but one – Humboldt – were annexed into Oak Park by 1860; Ravenswood remained unannexed until 1870 when it became part of the village created there that year by combining parts of Evergreen Heights and Humboldt Streets south from Lake Michigan Avenue to form what is now known as "the Loop". In 1871–1872 two new towns were added to Cook County – Maywood to the north and Harrisonburg to the south – making total county organization at 28 with 7 townships plus Ravenswood still unannexed although annexed into Oak park six years later The first school started serving students grades one through four inside what is currently known as Grinding Mill No 1 circa 1830 utilizing whatever materials could be found lying around like rocks or logs at that time

The first post office in Oak Park was established in 1812. In 1847, the town was organized into a village and named after oak trees that lined the streets.
