Oak Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 32,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Oak Park was laid out on May 25, 1871, by Colonel John P. Lynch and named for an oak tree that he saw near his farmhouse. The first post office in Oak Park was established on October 3, 1872. Oak Park originally consisted of just a few buildings on the east side of Elm Street between 95th and 106th Streets. A fire destroyed most of the town on December 6, 1901, including all but three buildings in what is now Oak Park. Only a few hundred people remained when World War I began and conflict broke out in Europe; many Americans left for financial reasons or to avoid military service. Most residents returned during peace time though some moved away again during World War II when production of oil increased in Illinois and elsewhere due to wartime demand. In 1951 many new homes were built along with a large shopping center which became one of the fastest-growing areas in downtown Chicago; this redevelopment caused much concern among neighbors about water resources as well as air quality because large amounts of asphalt were used to project new roofs over older schools and businesses - an issue that still persists today as surfaces are newer than original brickwork: In 1964 OakPark voters passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against gays or lesbians within city limits based on their sexual orientation – making it one of only two cities in the United States with such a policy at that time (the other being San Francisco). In 1990 OakPark voters passed another ordinance prohibiting smoking indoors within city limits – making it one of only two American cities with such ordinances at that time (the other being Seattle).
The first permanent white settlement inOak Park was a group of farmers who arrived in 1837. The town was organized on July 1, 1839, from the merger of two villages, Arlington and Oak Lawn. In 1840, the village of Arlington merged with Oak Park to form one municipality. On November 20, 1846, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill creating a new township named for John Fenton, an American Revolutionary War officer and signer of the United States Constitution. The Act created Elmhurst Township (later Elmhurst County) in Chicago and adjacent portions of Cook County. On December 12, 1847, Elmhurst Township was renamed after William H. Taft – president at the time and father of Ulysses S. Grant – as part of his efforts to solidify Republican support throughout Illinois during the 1850s election season. Taft had been elected as governor in mid-1848 but lost approval by Congress due to his role in pioneering railroads across America during that period. To solidify its position within Chicago's rapidly growing city limits movement towards annexation began to gain momentum; on January 25, 1853 Elmhurst Township annexed far northwestern Cook County including parts of what is now Oak Park . This action would create what is today known as North Lawndale Neighborhoods in Chicago . In 1865 both townships were combined into one municipality under Mayor Dufresne's administration; this change allowed for more rapid growth around downtown with less regulation from municipal governments..
