Oak Park, Illinois is a city located in central Illinois on the west bank of the River Black. It was founded by subscription in 1837 from sections of Rock Island and land within what is now Chicago. The city's first president, James K. Polk, once said that "Oak Park is one of the most beautiful cities in America." Oak Park has a population of over 127,000 residents as of 2019. The city was named for two trees from its inception: an oak tree that grows near the Illinois state line and a maple tree which stands near the mouth of the River Black. The name Oak Park was chosen to honor John Quincy Adams' fifth wife Abigail Adams (née Quincy) who had been born there in 1802 and died there in 1847. Mrs.Adams' father, Charles Adams had also settled in this area around 1800 and it was through him that Oak Park became part of Chicago when he donated land to make it an incorporated town on November 3, 1837. The first mayor of Oak Park was John Prentice who served from 1840-1844 and again from 1865-1867; he followed four years after Cook County Judge George Muhlenberg who had held office for two terms before becoming county treasurer at age 36 years old in 1861. In 1886 Mayor Harry Chandler took office after serving as Cook County Auditor for three years; his term expired on December 31st, 1888 so he succeeded Mayor John Fenton who continued until 1893 when he became State Senator from Cook County homosexual Abe Ruefenberg filled his seat instead making him the first openly gay person to serve as mayor of any American city or village when his term began on January 1st, 1895 with only days left until its expiration date February 15th; replaced by Abram Hewitt during their unexpired term During World War I veteran Captain Edward Aherns served with distinction as lieutenant colonel commanding C Company U S Army Infantry Regiment 124 at Camp Butler where he received many decorations including five Bronze Stars After World War II VFW Post #627 opened its doors here September 25th 1945 with 165 members inside Reverend Drury preached Thanksgiving sermon Daisy Mae Roberts officiated
