The opening of Lake Michigan led to heavy investment in real estate throughout Cook County during the late 19th century and early 20th century by Chicago entrepreneurs looking for new waterfront property near water that could be developed into neighborhoods such as Forsyth Heights and South Side Village. One result was Oak Park's incorporation as a municipality on April 2, 1907 via an act of the state legislature following a referendum vote by residents of unincorporated areas within Cook County boundaries who desired annexation into their larger municipal cousins. Today, Oak Park remains one of Chicago's most ethnically diverse cities with over 60% African American residents (the second largest concentration after Englewood), 30% Hispanic residents (second largest concentration afterElmhurst), 10% Asian Americans (second largest concentration after Garfield Heights), 5% white residents (fourth largest concentration after West Side) and 3% Native American/Alaskan Native residents (fifth largest concentration).

The first residents of what is now Oak Park were Dutch immigrants who settled there in 1795. In 1824, they organized as a town and named it after their then-home country of Holland. The original plat for Oak Park was filed on November 2, 1825 by John Nott and others under the name "Holland Township." The first post office was established in1827 and remained open until 1840. The present building was built on State Street in 1851 by Jno Copley as an jail and jailer's house for $5 per month from Revolutionary War veteran Isaac Newton (1772-1848). President James Kahl (1801-1865) became one of its first citizens when he moved to Oak Park from his home near Decatur IL during the presidency of Andrew Johnson (1868-1901). In 1916, Oak Park joined with Morningside Heights to form the new City of Chicago; however, annexation efforts failed due to lack of support from other municipalities within Cook County that wanted to be included (the merger would have made Oak Park one of Chicago's five "cities"). In 1961, following annexation by Cook County proper, Mayor Richard Mowery proposed annexing neighboring West Englewood into Oak park; this proposal too met resistance due to differences between these two communities over race and social welfare policies enacted during Frank Lautenberg's mayoral tenure (Lautenberg had served as United States Senator from NJ from 1973-1981). After further negotiations between both communities culminating with passage of a referendum requesting annexation by both cities - which finally occurred on May 3rd -Oak park became an official city with full jurisdiction over all seven wards located within its boundaries! A number of downtown businesses were relocated or closed during this time as developers began construction on what would become Loop Drive – then designated University Avenue – creating what is now known as downtown oak park. With continued growth throughout recent decades came increased housing development including upscale apartment buildings along Michigan Avenue adjacent to Soldier Field Stadium; several highrise condominium towers also sprung up around Lake Shore Drive/63rd Street which continue to be popular today despite major redevelopment projects that took place in late 2009/2010 including demolishing much older infrastructure
Oak Park was founded in 1836 by Colonel John Richardson and his wife, Sarah. The city was named after a large oak tree that once stood near the original town site. The first settlers were farmers and fur traders who moved into the area during the 1830s. In 1836, Richardson purchased 640 acres of land west of Chicago from James K. Polk for $1,000. He built a small cabin and began to develop the area into a farming community with several stores, schools, and churches. Englishman George Stephenson developed an electric locomotive called the Illinois Central at Oak Park in 1849 which helped spur development in the area. In 1860, Richards donated land to the city for use as public square and gardens. The city hall was built on this property in 1865 and is still used today as a municipal building.
