Oak Park is a city in the Illinois River Valley on the border of Cook County and Will County. The population was 96,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. Oak Park is one of two cities in Cook County that are both located withinChicago City Limits. The first people to live in what is now Oak Park were Osage Indians who retreated from an advancing European force that had invaded their territory. The Pekin band of Potawatomi Indians also settled here around 1800-1805. In 1836, General James K. Polk appointed Robert Morrison as Surveyor for this area which included much of what is now Oak Park and parts of nearby Humboldt Township. Oak Park's rich history began with its location on the banks of theIllinois River, where fur traders and farmers traded goods they had acquired along the route between Canada and Mexico for Native American goods such as robes, beads, weapons, cornmeal mush (a type of flour), deer meat, hides and other items valuable to settlers in what are now Northwestern Illinois. In 1837 Aiken founded Elmwood Canalside Company which built canalside homes on land donated by John Dennison near present day Elmwood Avenue/Route 66/90th Street Streets east of Chicago Avenue (now Midway Boulevard). By 1840 more than 100 homes were built on four tracts totaling . In 1847 Doniphan & Sons built a millrace across frompresent day 63rd Street and East Ottawa Avenue northwest of Elmwood Avenue just south of 60th Place Road; this millrace became part Of Doniphan Dam later renamed Glenbrook Reservoir In 1850 Michael Jett started building a sawmill about one mile west off Route 66 near present day 61st Street north of Grand Lake Drive; this mill soon became known asthe Jett Saw Mill After him other entrepreneurs set up businesses including a grocery store (1857), carriage garage (1859), tannery (1860), restaurant (1861)and physician’s office(1862).
