Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,812 at the 2010 census. Oak Lawn is one of the most diverse cities in Illinois and has a rich history dating back to its founding as a small town on Chicago's North Side. The first settler in what is now Oak Lawn was James Harper who arrived on October 1, 1847. He and his family were among the first people to settle in what would become Oak Lawn when the area was part of Mayfield Township (present-day Cook County). One of Harper's sons, John Harper Sr., donated land to make up present-day downtown Oak Lawn. The name "Oak Lawn" came from a large oak tree that had been located near their home before they moved there. In 1881, an act of the Illinois General Assembly authorized Mayor George Biddle to build a new City Hall on South Western Avenue in downtown Oak Lawn – making it the first municipality in Cook County with its own government. From then until 1903, when annexation by Chicago made it part of the city limits, Oakleigh functioned as a separate village within Chicago jurisdiction. In 1907–08, after protracted wrangling between Chicago and Lake Forest over charter changes for both villages - including one proposed that would have given both villages equal representation onChicago's Board of Education - Mayor John McCormick allowed both villages to merge into one municipal unit under his leadership and continue using their own name (though without any power or authority over each other). On January 1st 1914 - just two years after becoming an incorporated city - citizens of both villages voting by referendum approved merger into one entity with corporate powers exercisable through City Hall which then became known as "Oak Lawn". Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,813 at the 2010 census. Oak Lawn is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was platted on November 1, 1848, by George Stephenson and his brother James Stephenson; it was named for the large oak tree near their home on Maple Street. Oak Lawn is bordered to the north by North Side Avenue, to the east by Midtown Avenue and to the south by South Side Avenue. It contains two small neighborhoods: Northwest Oakland and Southwest Oak Lawn. The first major development in Oak Lawn took place after its incorporation as a city on November 1, 1848. On this date, George Stephenson donated land for a public park which would eventually become Soldier Field; James Stephenson donated land for a courthouse and jail. These were both important symbols of townhood since they helped establish infrastructure that allowed for more rapid development of Oak Lawn in subsequent years. On December 4th of that year (1849), construction began on what is now Midtown Cemetery; it was one of only a few cemeteries in Chicago at that time and became an important source of revenue for the city government. In 1850–51 alone, Midtown Cemetery earned $2,000 from tickets to view its displays of skulls and bones! In 1854–55 (during Andrew Johnson's presidency), work began on Jackson Park which would later become Abraham Lincoln's presidential palace; during this time period also construction began on Elmwood Hospital which would play an important role in helping create Chicago's first hospital district – now known as Hahnemann Medical Center). In 1860–61 (just before Abraham Lincoln was elected president), work started on what is now Wacker Drive – considered one of Chicago's most famous streets today because it leads directly to Soldier Field where he delivered his inaugural address! This event marks not just an important milestone in local history but also helped spur further growth within Oak lawn – much like today’s downtown areas are gradually gentrifying with increasing nightlife options available nearby
