The township's name changed to West Side Township in 1893 when it annexed parts of Hinsdale. In 1912, Oak Lawn annexation completed with all but two blocks (to the west) of Englewood Avenue between Irving Park Road and Cicero Avenue becoming its own independent city. The remaining blocks were annexed by Chicago in 1916. On February 15, 1961, Oak Lawn merged into the City of Chicago through an act passed by theChicagoCity Council; it had been proposed by Mayor Richard J. Daley that year as part of his "New Cities" initiative to improve downtown services for residents not within traditional city limits who wished to move into new areas such as Loop or Near South Side neighborhoods outside downtown boundaries but still maintain some affiliation with their old home town or village; this merger made Oak Lawn both a full-fledged member

Oak Lawn is a city in the southern Illinois region of the United States. The population was 27,890 at the 2010 census. Oak Lawn is located east of Chicago on the south side of the River Chicago and is bordered by LaGrange to the east, Westchester to the north, and Aurora to the west. The city began as a small settlement on May 6, 1846, when three farmers named John Hargrave, Isaac Brown, and James Butler founded what would become known as "Oak Lawn." In 1847-48 two surveyors from Decatur discovered an area that would later be called "Oak Lawn" due to its oak trees. The first store in Oak Lawn was built on Wabasha Street in 1850. In 1853-54 Methodist Episcopal minister Rev. Elijah Blanton organized a church congregation at what would become known as "New Beginnings." Reverend Blanton served as pastor until his death in 1865. In 1861-62 Abraham Lincoln visited Oak Lawn while he was campaigning for office and enjoyed a picnic dinner at Academy Park which included refreshments provided by local merchants. In 1865-66 President Andrew Johnson visited Oak lawn while he was touring northern Illinois after winning election defeating incumbent Ulysses S. Grant In 1870s Elmira Savings Bank opened up shop on Neely Street near today's Eisenhower Drive and First National Bank (now part of JPMorgan Chase) opened up business in 1876 on State Street between Adams Boulevard and Pulaski Road across from Presentation Church (now Stony Brook University). At this time most businesses were conducted out of homes with residents coming into town for services such as groceries or banking privileges needed for day-to-day transactions like cash handling or just to see their neighbor - something that still exists today with some exceptions like Walmart being doing business out of buildings since 1978 instead of inside stores). On November 3rd 1870 vote took place for Mayor who elected Cephus Davenport with 39% majority against 2 other candidates John Cooksey (27%) and Jno Pugh (21%). Cooksey had been appointed Mayor pro tempore by Governor Yates after Mayor Davenport resigned because he could not agree to any new taxes proposed by then governor Bruce Rauner without Rauner's signature which angered many citizens including many mayoralty hopefuls.. The City Council Building was dedicated December 1st 1870 during Christmas season days following service dedication ceremonies held at present day Christmastime Eve LutheranChurch also located adjacent to current site along North Avenue before it became College Ave., now home of Iveco Truckstop restaurant . On December 15th 1871 fire destroyed all but one building in downtown Oakland lawn setting off far spread panic including reports that Vice President Fillmore had arrived in town earlier that day looking for assistance On January 5th 1872 A bill proposing annexation by Elmira passed both houses with only one dissenting vote receiving an order from Douglas County Circuit Court Judge James Goudreau ordering village officials not to recognize annexation until further notice . This effectively ended any hope city residents may have had if they wanted annexation given Arlington Heights already had done so Finally incorporation happened effective February 8th 1872 when ordinance number 9052was approved giving final approval forcity government operations .. All outgoing Dixon appointees were fired upon taking oaths of office effective March 1st except Controller George Stephenson who continued working under previous administration until his discharge effective July 20th 1886 .. After 4 years director Jno Pugh retiredeffective September 30th1875 leaving entire management responsibility within newly created Board Of Commissioners headed by City Manager George Stephenson .. There are several theories why Director Jno Pugh left early; one theory suggests he disapproved of recent board direction which led directly to increased spending unapproved by upper management; another theory suggests Pugh felt overwhelmed trying To manage large municipal budget while keeping close tabs on individual employees/units; another theory suggests PUGH MAY HAVE BEEN FOUNDED WITH RESPECT TO CONTRACT MANAGEMENT ISSUE ESPECIALLY WITH RESPECT TO THE NUMBER OF NEW CONTRACTOR APPOINTMENTS AS REPORTED BY HIS predecessor AND ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER SAMUEL MCDANIEL
