Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 53,652 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The city was founded in 1846 as a small village on the east side of Chicago by German immigrants. In 1915, Oak Lawn became a separate municipality and was incorporated as a city in 1925. The population grew rapidly from its original nucleus of only 10 residents to 100,000 by 1960; and then to 200,000 by 1990. Growth continued through the 2000s as suburbanites moved into the area around downtown Oak Lawn; however, recent years have seen a decline in population due to immigration and annexation by neighboring municipalities. Oak Lawn is home to two universities: Northwestern University and DePaul University. There are also numerous professional institutions such as Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and Motorola Solutions Incorporated located within or near the city limits: Northrop Grumman Corporation has its headquarters on North Clark Street just west of I- 95 while Abbott Laboratories has its international headquarters on West Irving Park Road opposite Midway Airport (formerly known as Midway Airport). Oak Lawn was first settled in 1808 by the Potawatomi Indians. The town was named for an oak tree that stands on the site today. The first settler, James Robertson, erected a log cabin in what is now the business district of Oak Lawn. The town grew rapidly and by 1835 it had a population of 100 people. In 1838, the Illinois General Assembly passed a billocating Oak Lawn to Champaign County and it became part of that county in 1839. In 1870, construction began on Illinois Central Railroad tracks through Oak Lawn. This caused rapid growth and development within the town center and along the railroad tracks. By 1900, Oak Lawn had a population of 5,000 people and it was becoming one of Champaign County's most important communities. In 1907, the city built its first schoolhouse and later added a second building which served as both a library and home to City Hall until 1959. During World War II, Oak Lawn played an important role in providing food for troops stationed in Illinois at various camps throughout the state. One such camp was Camp Lejeune in North Carolina where many residents donated their homes or land to provide shelter for troops during World War II. After the war ended, many residents decided to remain in Oak lawn and continue their lives there after they were discharged from military service.
