Oak Lawn, Illinois is a city in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,362 at the 2010 census. The first recorded mention of Oak Lawn is from 1695 when it was part of Colchester Township. The township was disbanded in 1790 when Winnetka village was formed. In 1835, Oak Lawn became part of Rockford Township. On February 15, 1847, Rockford merged with other townships in Kane County to form a new municipality known as "Rock Island". That name reverted back to "Oak Lawn" on March 3rd of that year when all but two wards were absorbed into Rock Island's town government. On November 6th 1912 voters approved an ordinance authorizing construction of a large steel mill within city limits which would become known as the "Oak Lawn Steel Mill Company". The company failed to make its initial investments and filed for bankruptcy in 1914. However, following efforts by Mayor John Joly (D) and State Senator James Meckel (R),the company reopened under new management in 1917 and began producing automobiles. In 1924–1925 gubernatorial candidate William Jennings Bryan campaigned on behalf of local congressman John Latham while he also visited Oak Lawn for three days during his primary campaign against Alfred Ebey Sr.. During this time Congressman Latham made speeches at various businesses around town before finally stopping at the steel mill where he met with factory workers and discussed issues related to their lives such as unemployment insurance Reforms being tried then legislation beingintroduced into Congress seeking similar benefits for Flint Michigans auto workers who had gone on strike several months earlier In 1928 Congressman Latham ran for re-election against incumbent Mayor John Joly but lost handily even though machine voting existed in some precincts thus establishingrocking precedent which has been followed ever since; machines not being used exclusively for presidential elections . By 1934 there were over 1 000 employees employed at the plant making it one of largest employers in Rockford . However World War II intervened testing how well production could go without interruption so production ceased abruptly along with most other industrial establishments due largely to wartime restrictions ; however afterwards many plants restarted including Oak lawn steel mill which continued operation until 1966 producing carsAVHSW
