Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. The area now comprising Oak Lawn was once part of the town of Plainfield. Oak Lawn is located on the eastern edge of Chicago and bordered to the north by Lake Michigan and to the south by Will County and suburbs of Chicago. It is one of two cities in Cook County with a land area exceeding 100 square miles (290 km²). The first European settlers in what became Oak Lawn were Dutchmen who arrived from Holland in 1672 and settled near what is now Wicker Park. They named their new community "Plainfield", because they had not yet discovered any Algonquian peoples living there. A group of Englishmen under Rear Admiral John Graves Simcoe, 1st Viscountesssimcoe landed at what is now Northwest Side Harbor Beach on October 14, 1795, as part of an effort to establish British possessions east of the Mississippi River. However, only eight people - six men and two women - made it ashore and set up camp near today's Navy Pier before being forced back by a shore battery that night. Early settler George Hennepin erected a cabin on State Street near where he lived until his death in 1815; he bequeathed $1 million (equivalent to $ as of ) to Cook County for public works projects including roads, bridges, schools and hospitals during his lifetime In 1802-03 Daniel Webster led an unsuccessful campaign against Adams for U.S. Senate from Illinois In 1824 Hardesty organized three hundred farmers into what became known as "the First Normal School District" which served students from Plainfield Township through Northwestern University In 1836-37 Andrew Johnson was elected President pro tempore of the United States Senate That year Abraham Lincoln was elected Vice President under James Buchanan On November 3, 1860 Oak Lawn residents voted 2-to-1 in favor of secession from Illinois over vote against Ashley's resolution proposal presented by Congressman Richard Jealous . On December 12th Andrew Johnson signed Executive Order 998 called "An Act For The Regulation And Governance Of Foreign Missions" which granted citizenship to all American Citizens born or naturalized within seven years after its passage . After Lincoln's assassination on April 14th 1865 Oak lawn became Arlington Heights with 8500 residents

Oak Lawn, Illinois is a city located in the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded on October 10, 1867, by men from the village of Oak Lawn and was named for General John J. Pershing. The population of the City of Oak Lawn was estimated to be over 100,000 in 1990 census[1], making it one of the most populous cities in Illinois. The history of Oak Lawn began with a group of pioneers who journeyed westward during the winter of 1847-1848. They were inspired to move because they thought there would be no land available for them in their home village. Upon arrival at what is now downtown Elmhurst, they found that all but one house had been destroyed by fire a few years earlier while settlers were building their homes near Prairie du Chien Lake.[2] In order to avoid confusion and possible conflict between their new home and Elmhurst's existing businesses and residents, the founders decided that Oak Lawn would be its own municipality – an event which has been commemorated annually since then with a town meeting held on October 10th. The first steps towards becoming an actual town were made when two citizens purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of downtown Elmhurst for $4 per acre (1 hectare). This purchase allowed for growth as many people flocked to Elmhurst due to its location close to transportation and other amenities such as mills and churches. The first real construction took place around this time; a Presbyterian church was built on Euclid Street in 1868 and a schoolhouse soon followed on Broadway Avenue across from what is now Roosevelt Park.[3] By 1870, it seemed as though things were moving rapidly enough that another sale occurred; this time, 4 tracts totaling 652 acres (247 hectares) east of downtown were offered for $10 per acre (2 hectares).[4] At this point in time, much attention was being given to developing new territory surrounding Chicago due to increasing concerns about its potential future as an industrial center[5]. The addition of these properties not only increased development within what is now known as Downtown Oak Lawn but also added even more space between Elmhurst/Oak Lawn proper and Northwestern Indiana beyond - creating what is today known as Northwestern Indiana Oakland Township[6]. Despite some opposition from some residents who felt like their turf had been taken away,[7], annexation happened nonetheless following heated debate[8][9]. Though annexed into Cook County,[10][11],Oak lawn experienced rapid growth throughout the mid 1800s until World War I stopped any further expansion plans short. After hostilities ended however, the city quickly resumed development momentum thanks largely to various government subsidies meant specifically for municipalities growing faster than others within Cook County - including property tax breaks that totaled up to $500 per year when needed[12][13]! A variety unique features developed during this time including: automotive manufacturing plants clustered around Matteson Road near Wacker Drive; several large housing developments such as Regency Oaks located just northwest of downtown along State Street;[14][15]and finally professional sports teams - starting with baseball operations being set up at Wicker Park before eventually expanding into football following Prohibition[16][17]. During these yearsOak lawn consistently placed 3rd or 4th out Of 5 Cities In Illinois In Gross Domestic Product According To Forbes Magazine! Though post-war prosperity brought job creation opportunities throughout Cook County,[18]the city could not remain stagnant forever – slowly but surely reaching levels seen prior only through natural attrition or war-time rebounds (i.e.,1920’s->1930’s->1940’s->1950’s->1960’s->1970’s etc.) As recently as 2000 census data shows that population size is still well above 100K & there are planned expansions slated both Inner Loop & Outer Loop!!!
