Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the South Side of Chicago. Oak Lawn was incorporation as a village on December 1, 1892. It became an incorporated municipality on January 1, 1968. The Village of Oak Lawn was named for John Dolan Oaklaye who donated land to make it a town in 1853. As the Town of Oak Lawn grew larger it needed more space and so on November 3rd 1870 voters approved annexation into the City of Chicago by vote of 5-1 with Mayor Washington being one of those joining the city from rural Cook County. The first mayor and council were James Phelan (chairman) Michael Nevin (vice chairman), George Shoup (secretary), Michael Moran (treasurer) Averill Harriman (mayor) Seymour Lavin Maynard( recorder). On December 1st 1892 village residents adopted an ordinance creating a nine member board including chairman Michael Nevin, vice chairmen George Shoup and Seymour Lavin Maynard Additionally trustees were elected by lot which greatly increased democratic representation on village boards In 1916 when oak lawn annexed Humboldt Park it also added portions of what is now Riverdale which falls under its jurisdiction The following year when oak lawn annexed Roseland Heights it also added portions of what is now North Lawndale In 1922 when oak Lawn annexed Hyde Park it also added portions of what is now Bronzeville On October 15th 1928 when oak lawn annexed parts of Greshamsville there was also annexation into that Village
