Oak Lawn was founded on December 27, 1846 by John A. Logan and his wife Laura Bogan Logan and was named after the oak trees that grow near their farmstead. The first post office in what would become Oak Lawn opened on October 15, 1848. In 1908, Oak Lawn became a city and its first mayor was Samuel Schieffer. Oak Lawn experienced rapid growth following World War II as soldiers from nearby Joliet Veterans Affairs Medical Center relocated to the city for health care services and housing opportunities during the war years. This influx of new residents led to an increase in joblessness and crime rates; however, this had no negative effect on Oak Lawn's overall economy or quality of life because it had a large influx of businesses who were able to create jobs for local residents despite these challenges. In 1973, Elmhurst Township merged with Oak Lawn to form a larger municipality known as "The City of Oaks". The merger helped improve economic conditions within the combined municipality while also increasing school-related amenities such as parkland and libraries within Elmhurst Township which were not available withinOakLawn itself
