Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,519 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. The first people to live in what is now Oak Lawn were the Potawatomi Indians who hunted and fished along the St. Clair River. They constructed their villages near Cahokia Mounds, which are now part of Park Forest Cemetery. A mill built by Nicholas Biddle on the riverbank in 1795 became one of the largest flour mills in America at that time. In 1824, John Harrigan established what is today Harrigan's Pharmacy on Wabash Avenue in what is now Elmhurst Mall. This was followed by John Fenton's Brewery on State Street (now Irving Park Road) in 1835 and finally George Weyerhaeuser's grocery store on Michigan Avenue (now Lakeview Terrace) in 1845 which became one of the first successful grocery stores outside of New York City. The area around South Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue became known as "the North Side." In 1892, two brothers – Alfred Humes and Arthur Ashe – founded Knox College which soon became one of Illinois' leading universities with campuses located throughout Chicagoland including Oak Lawn-Homesburg (1911), Lombard (1915), Urbana-Champaign (1920), Evanston-Winnetka (1925), Northwestern University (1929) and Drake University(1973). Oak Lawn also played an important role as a center for industrial research during World War II with many companies operating out of its buildings such as Deering Aircraft Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Monsanto Chemical Corporation among others In addition to its colleges/universities there are numerous other notable institutions that have call or presence within Oak Lawn including: McCormick Place–a facility used by both federal government agencies such as NASA and Department of Defense; Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum; Macklinore Museum Of Art; Kane County Jail; Stritch Center For The Arts And Humanities

Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. Many residents also own prestigious homes located throughout central Cook County or suburban areas within reach of downtownChicago.
Oak Lawn, Illinois had its beginnings in 1812 when a group of farmers who lived on the west side of Chicago founded the town of Oak Lawn. The name "Oak Lawn" was chosen because of the oak trees that were present in the area. The town was incorporated on February 17, 1836. In 1847, Oak Lawn became part of Cook County and was renamed Crystal City. In 1961, Crystal City became an independent city and it retained its original name. On December 22, 1972, Crystal City merged with neighboring Westchester to form what is now called Chicago-Westchester Township.
