Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,819 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. In 1871, costal farmers founded what would become known as "The Village" on land that they had purchased from Captain John Saginaw for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $2,600 today). The first settler in what would become Oak Lawn was George Aitken who arrived with his family in 1875. In 1887, Ebenezer Lodge bought 1/2 mile (3 km) of lakefront property contiguous with present-day Elmhurst and built a home there which he named "Ebenezer Lodge". He donated it to Chicago as part of a larger donation that also included land near Wrigley Field and another piece north of Lake Michigan beach (present day Navy Pier). Famed professional golfer Bobby Jones lived for many years adjacent to Hargrave House on Halsted Street between Kedzie Avenue and Division Street before moving into nearby Van Buren Place in 1957; later he resided at 272 South Dearborn Street until his death in 1994. Oak Lawn has always been home to internationally respected institutions such as Northeastern Illinois University Hospital, Northwestern University Feinberg School Of Medicine, DePaul University Marketplace Campus, McCormick Place Shopping Center and more recent additions like UIUC’s Jack McNamara Quadrangle Campus – one of only two universities outside Illinois with a quadrangle campus model – ILWU’s West Campus and Kane Community College’s East Campus within walking distance or less than 10 minutes by bike or car from downtown Chicago.

Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. Oak Lawn is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the towns of Calumet City to the south and west, River Forest to the north and east, Lombard to the northeast and Arthur Park to the northwest. The town of Oak Lawn was first settled in 1829 by American Revolutionary War veteran John Lawler. He named it after his home county of Virginia, England. In 1835, David Maryland built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in what was then known as rural Elmhurst Township. One year later he erected a frame courthouse which served as a local court for many years until it was replaced in 1912 by a new courthouse designed by architect Charles Wickerham. In 1847-48 John Haskins surveyed land nearby for annexation into Cook County and submitted plans for an agricultural township called “Oak Lawn” which would include much of today's Oak Lawn Village including most of downtown Oak Lawn as well as several surrounding villages including Lockport and Lansingburgh. The town board approved Haskins' plan on December 1, 1848; however, no development occurred until after World War II when many farmers moved out because of high prices for farmland during that time period caused by advances in transportation methods such as cars and trucks
Oak Lawn was once part of the Town of Itasca, and its first settler was John Doan in 1837. The town was organized in 1842 and became a city on December 3, 1907.
