The first settler in what is now Oak Lawn was John Capps who arrived in 1837. He built his home on the site that would later become Elmhurst Road and named it after his family's farm location near Deerfield Village in Deerfield Township in Upper Canada. Other early settlers included Daniel Dandridge (1839-1914) and Amos Prentice (1841-1900). In 1847 John Fenton bought 6 acres (2 ha) of land from Amos Prentice for $100; this parcel became known as "Fenton's Prairie". In 1870 Jno Biddle founded the Northwestern Illinois Railroad which connectedChicago with Peoria through Oak Lawn Junction. This railroad allowed easy access to agricultural goods coming downriver from central Illinois and Indiana which led to rapid growth within the village throughout much of the 19th century - something that can be seen today throughout much of suburban Cook County including Oak Lawn itself.. One major event that helped spur growth within Oak Lawn during this time period was when residents voted to establish their own fire department on February 17th, 1898 – one day after incorporation into Chicago!
