Oak Lawn, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 40,544 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Chicago and the third-largest in Cook County. Oak Lawn's boundaries are: east to the Cook River and south to Lake Michigan; west to the Loop and north to Humboldt Park. The first settlers of what would become Oak Lawn were farmers who arrived around 1833. In 1836, John Cavanaugh purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from Abraham Lincoln for $1,000. The original town site was located on a bend in the river where Wicker Park now stands. A post office called "Oak Lawn" was established in 1840, but it never became a major center of commerce or culture because it had no rail connection and its citizens could not travel far enough for such an important function. In 1847, Jens Jensen founded Chicago Polytechnic Institute (now Northwestern University), which offered technical education until 1865 when it became part of the state Normal School system. In 1860–1862, Daniel Burnham designed and built South Side High School on land that he donated to Chicago Public Schools as part of his public works program as mayor of Chicago. In 1868–1869 John Payne organized a group of investors who purchased 1 acre () near Wacker Drive for $100 ($2 per capita) so they could start development on what would eventually become Oak Lawn Square about two blocks east from Burnham's original high school building along North Western Avenue between Belden Avenue and Irving Park Road today known as Payne Woods Boulevard - just east of Union Station on State Street then north into Rogers Park today known as Near West Side Boulevard - all within present day Oak Lawn Township limits with Gresham hamlet being annexed by village late 19th century still included within township limits larger than present day town limit 26 blocks long with current village limits extending beyond eastern edge or borderline if desired annexation possible
