Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Cook County and the second-largest city east of Chicago. The nickname "The City of Roses" comes from its high concentration of orchids and other roses. Oak Lawn was founded on October 12, 1871 by John Fenton and his brothers Jacob and Nicholas Fenton as a small farming village about southwest of Chicago. In 1886, Oak Lawn became one of five townships in Cook County that were consolidated with Aurora to form the new county of Cook. The name "Oak Lawn" first appeared on a map published in 1892 when it was part of Aurora Township but had not been given official recognition until 1912 when it was included within the newly created town of Glen Ellyn. When Glen Ellyn merged with Park Forest to form Elmhurst in 1924, Oak Lawn remained an independent municipality under Park Forest's jurisdiction but it regained its own government status on December 1, 1927 when all municipalities within Park Forest were reorganized into a single city pursuant to the Local Government Code (LGC). In 1949, Oak Lawn annexed land beyond its limits northward to meet Crystal Lake which had recently been added to Cook County as part of the plan to suburbanize Chicago. In 1974–1975, during the last days of Mayor Richard Maturen's administration before he was elected mayoralty president, Oak Lawn annexed portions of Harvey Hills westward from I- 95 for $1 million dollars which made it one of only two cities in Illinois that acquired property outside their original boundaries during this time period; also neighboring Skokie acquired western DuPage River Valley territory from Champaign County in 1966 for $2 million dollars making both cities twin sister cities sharing resources and services such as transportation (Skokie has since annexations extending southward along I- 90 into neighboringpantown Danville) while Oak lawn retains exclusive rights to build upon Harvey Hills' mineral resources including coal seams dating back more than 350 years A referendum approved annexation requests by Urbana Heights & Addison Township east side developers who wanted annexation into their township due to housing shortages caused by population growth since 1975; these annexation requests have never been accepted because no land has ever been available for incorporation within those communities . Consequently current residents or commuters traveling through either community are required either take Interstate 94 east/west or take MacArthur Road/Lake Zurich Road which runs parallel then turns northeast towards Evanston

Oak Lawn is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 38,725 at the 2010 census. The name "Oak Lawn" was first given to the community by John Quincy Adams. It is located in the Northwest Side of Chicago. Oak Lawn has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1836 as part of what was then Prairie Town Township. The township changed its name to Cook County in 1847 and Oak Lawn remained part of that county until it became an independent municipality in 1912. The first settler in what would become Oak Lawn was Isaac Kappeler, who arrived on October 24, 1836, from Germany with his family. Kappeler founded a log cabin near present-day Waukegan Road and York Road and named his settlement "Kappelerville." He and his family were among the earliest settlers in Cook County. Other early settlers included George Hargrave (1837), Elijah Denton (1839), Levi Richardson (1840), James Gage (1841), John Sprague (1843), Thomas Prentice (1845), Daniel Webster Kane (1846) and Jacob Weiser(1793-?). A schoolhouse was built for Kappeler's children by German immigrants Mathias & Heinrich Bickerstaff in 1838 on land donated by pioneer Andrew Higgins Sr.. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln attended a conference at Kappeler's cabin where he gave the commencement address from an open platform on a tree stump outside ofpresent day McKinley Park Cemeteryanda taught Englischer Schule which led to him becoming known as one of America's leading educators during this time period In 1850, John Fisk moved into what would become Oak Lawn from Aurora with his wife Rachelle Custer Fisk and their two children Lewis & Laura Fisk; they were followed three years later by their father & siblings Amos Custer & Hannah Jane Dodge who also settled there. By 1860, most of Aurora had been destroyed by violence caused by gold rush fever so many people fled or were driven out during that time period including some who founded Elgin Heights which would eventually be annexed into Oak Lawn . Among those original founders Niles Eldredge Mosely settled permanently around this time along with others such as Obadiah Stevens McIntosh , Solomon Northrup Loganathan , William King Stoddard& Josephine Hull all natives of Massachusetts Bay Colonies born within 3 years after arriving in Illinois Fulton Fish Company establish warehouse next door soon afterwards John Fisk died suddenly unmarried leaving behind four boys aged 9-14 years old Lewis+Laura+Amos=Fisk 4th grade education
Oak Lawn was founded in 1857 by E. W. White as a small village on the banks of the Chicago River. The village grew rapidly and soon had a post office, school, churches, and a grocery store. In 1874, Oak Lawn became part of the city of Chicago. In 1907, Oak Lawn merged with neighboring Park Ridge to form one large city.
