Oak Lawn is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 74,026 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the McCormick Place Convention Center. The city was founded in 1847 by John P. Morton and James M. Ryan as a small farming community on the banks of the Noyes River adjacent to what is now downtown Chicago. In 1881, Morton and others purchased land east of Oak Lawn from General David Dixon for $2 million; this created the current downtown area which includes much of Oak Lawn's commercial and cultural history. The first public school in town was built in 1847 on Wabash Avenue between Dearborn and Stahl Streets; it moved to its present location on Irving Park Road near State Street in 1865 after being damaged by a fire. Caldwell Academy, one of Chicago's first high schools, opened in 1870 on West Side Highway between Damen Avenue and Grand Boulevard; it became Central High School in 1912 when it merged with Harper College (now University of Michigan-Dearborn). In 1889, Morton donated land along Lake Michigan north of town to create McCormick Place Convention Center which remains today an important part of local economy and culture. In 1907, Mayor George Pullman convened a group made up mostly of businessmen to study ways to improve transportation within Cook County; their report recommended that towns be placed at various locations around the county so that people could easily get from one end to another without having to leave their homes or go through dangerous streetsblocks or dark alleys. This resulted in the construction of various transportation projects over ensuing years including: railroad lines running through town center making it easier for farmers and commuters alike access jobs outside city limits; streetlights becoming more widespread so people wouldn't have to walk during night hours; new bridges being built connecting neighborhoods north and south of town creating larger areas where people could live close together without fear that they would be separated by traffic jams or difficult journey times into different parts of town
