In 1871, James Caldwell and his brother-in-law Jesse Leach founded the city of Chicago with six lots they had purchased from the original stockholders in the village of Weingarten near Detroit. Chicago's first white mayor was James Caldwell. The two brothers were also instrumental in helping to create Northwestern University (now Northwestern Michigan University) and Humboldt State College (now Prairie View A&M University). In 1886, they donated additional land to create what is now Adams Boulevard NW., which became home to their primary business interests including Jardine & Townsend Paper Company and American Tobacco Company. At that time, Oak Lawn consisted mainly of small farms with a few buildings scattered about between Adams Boulevard NW., Lawndale Avenue SW., Northwest Side Road NE., and Des Plaines Avenue NW.. In 1893 it became clear that there were too few people living in or around Oak Lawn for its proposed township form; rather than establish an independent municipality it amalgamated with neighboring communities of Lawndale Avenue SW., northwest side road NE., and Des Plaines Avenue NW.. That year also saw the opening of Pullman Palace Railway Station as one end point for passenger rail service into downtown Chicago from downstate Lake Shore Drive; this helped fuel development along greater north-south streets such as Michigan Ave./ Halsted Street/State St./Wabash Ave.) which are still recognized today as some of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Chicago – including much of Oak Lawn itself! Notwithstanding all these successes however, Caldwell died suddenly just before Christmas 1899 leaving his wife Alice Ritchie without children to take over her father's businesses - something which would become increasingly critical given that her husband had been extremely supportive both financially and emotionally throughout his life despite having no background in business himself...nor did he have any experience running businesses particularly within an urban setting! This circumstance led Alice Ritchie to sell off many family holdings but retain control over key operational aspects such as day care services for her employees - a move which would later prove crucial during World War II when demand for munitions grew exponentially thanks largely to advances made by America's allies like Japan

This newly created county had an estimated population of around 10,000 people and no governing body until 1869 when it consolidated with other counties to form the currentCook Countygovernment. At that time Oak Lawn's citizens voted to establish their own fire department which would become one of the most important civic institutions in their community The development of railroad lines brought about increased wheat production and trade through Oak Lawn; this drove prices lower enough for farmers to pay off their mortgage debt and buy homes outside of town A new educational institution called DePauw University opened its doors here in 1892 giving rise to what became known as "the old college town". In 1926 two African American students were admitted as part of a larger effort by black colleges across America to gain admittance into white universities while still abiding by discriminatory rules against blacks at such institutions In 1955 Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Jr.'s assassination made national headlines here as demonstrations erupted throughout Chicago over race relations following Dr King's highly controversial march from Grant Park through downtown (known today as MLK Day) culminating at McCormick Place
