Oak Lawn is a city in the Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,471 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Sangamon County and the largest city of its size in Chicago Area Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Oak Lawn covers an area of 9 square miles (22 km²). The first people to live in what is now Oak Lawn were part of the Peoria Indian Nation. In 1837, George Washington Carver moved from Kentucky to become a farmer and teacher in Springfield Township. He located a plantation on the current site of Maplewood Avenue and Creek Drive where he built a home that still stands today. In 1838, George Krieger founded Two Rivers Bank which became one of the largest banks west of Chicago. In 1847, John Aitken bought land north of present day Elmhurst Road for $5 per acre (0.4 ha). He named his farm "Aitken's Prairie" after himself and his father-in-law, James Aitken Sr., who had helped him purchase it from the Ottawa Indians about two years earlier. This property would later be renamed "Oak Lawn". In 1868, Josephine Perry married Augustus Dearborn Tucker and moved from Indiana to live near their farm on Crystal Lake Drive near present day Griggs Road and Pulaski Road. They raised three children there: Augustus Dearborn Tucker II (1869–1946), Alice Dearborn Tucker (1871–1953) and Josephine Dearborn Tucker III (1875–1945). This family would later move to Mundelein when their eldest son Julius died suddenly at age 36 while serving as captain in World War I with General Pershing’s American Expeditionary Force during 1918 off occasion at Belleau Wood near Paris France - this event is also commemorated by Oak Lawn through various annual events such as Julius Dearborn TuckerFestivals/Fairs/parades etc... However they remain permanent residents until today living on Maplewood Ave between Griggs Rd & Pulaski Rd 1 block east @ Griggs St As mentioned before they all attended local public schools just like most other citizens until recently thanks to some great efforts by several organizations such as Park District, Chicago Public Schools etc......

The Village of Oak Lawn was organized on December 1, 1908 from portions of the unincorporated community of Westmont. The first settler in what would become Oak Lawn was James Aikens who arrived in 1837 and homesteaded on the east side of present day State Road 56. Aiken's family operated a sawmill in their farmstead until 1852 when they sold it to John Hargrave and jointly founded the town of Westmont with him on November 8, 1852. In 1860, Jno. Pemberton moved his flour mill to what would become our current site on Douglas Avenue and River Road (now owned by Metra). In 1865, Amos Gibbs opened an ice cream parlor near South Genesee Street and Lake Shore Drive which became one of the most popular tourist attractions in the village until it closed its doors for good in 1984. In 1886-87 nickelodeon operator Frederick Kapp built a small pavilion at Washington Boulevard and Dearborn Street for visitors to enjoy during summertime programming called "Kapp's Klondike." One year later he donated land north of that intersection for Village Park which remains today one of downtownOakLawn's most popular amenities despite its lack of green spaces or playgrounds
