The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store opened in 1840. The population of Oak Forest grew rapidly during its early years, and by 1850 it had reached 100 residents. In 1858, Oak Forest became a part of the larger city of Chicago, and growth stopped until the late 1800s whenOak Forest began to experience significant economic decline. By 1900, Oak Forest had dwindled to only 10 residents, and by 1910 it had reverted back to a small rural community. In 1954, Oak Forrest merged with nearby Crystal City to form the current city of Crystal City.
