Owen Bledsoe became the first mayor of Oak Forrest on November 3, 1861 when he was elected over incumbent John Midgley by a vote of 11-1 instead of 6-3 as required by law. In 1870, George Wernham donated land southwest of downtown for a park which would later be named after him; this park includes much remains from early Oak Forrest such as his home which still stands today and an old schoolhouse used during prohibition era
On October 1, 1871, the first post office in Oak Forest opened. The village was named after the oak tree that stands near the original site of the post office.
