The history of Oak Forest dates back to 1847 when two brothers, Amos and Enoch Pratt, founded a farmstead called "Brewster" on an isolation pond near what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Milwaukee Road. The farmers there grew corn, wheat, and other crops; but their mainstay was hunting and fishing. In 1865, John Fenton bought Brewster from the Pratts and turned it into a thriving community with shops, churches, schools (including one run by itinerant Methodists), a post office (1867), grocery store (1868), livery stable (1870-71), sawmill (1872-75), hotel (1877-79), Masonic Lodge #2(1901) – soon followed by the first high school in Cook County – breweries for local consumption and trade among themselves as well as with neighboring townships; streetcar service began in 1883; oak groves were established on many of the lots in 1885; some 375 homes were built between 1895 and 1915. Fenton's heirs sold most or all of Oak Forest to developer John O'Neill in 1925 for $155 million dollars ($4 billion today). O'Neill subdivided it into tracts known as Parkwood I through Parkwood III to provide more housing opportunities for his workers while preserving its rural character. The downtown business district that surrounded City Hall until 1978 was destroyed by fire following prohibition repeal in that year which also destroyed much of Oak Forest's commercial center including several blocks of Oak Street between State Street/Milwaukee Road and Cicero Avenue/Lake Shore Drive. Most important to Oak Forest residents then were their parkland assets which comprised nearly one-thirds of all land within city limits at that time including Belmont Woods Golf Course owned by Friends Committee on Parks & Recreation; Butler Hills Recreation Area encompassing over half a mile along Butler Boulevard from Cherry Lane eastward to Cicero Avenue–Northwest corner thereof containing more than 350 acres undeveloped forest covered with diverse hardwoods including oak trees; West Side Open Space adjacent to McCormick Place Shopping Center totaling 443 acres west side across Cook County line dominated only by open space around McCormick Place rather than any developed uses such as retail or office parks typical elsewhere within village boundaries at this time especially after World War II suburban sprawl had begun throughout Cook County reaching out also into neighboring Lake View Terrace via Interstate 90 . Tracts Parkwood IV through Parkwood VII became mainly residential development providing parking spaces for organized night raids led by Chicago Police detectives known informally as "the Green Gang". These operations generated extensive political corruption which reached levels not seen since McCarthyism during the “Good Old Days” before Mayor Richard Murnane fired Superintendent Garry Wills after building investigations revealed systematic police brutality against black residents throughout Cook County dating back decades. In response Deputy Superintendent James Jankowski took over operation from Jankowski’s predecessor Anthony Batali who resigned due to whistleblower concerns about prior abuses perpetuated under Batali’s watch including multiple shootings involving street gangs targeting minority communities during predawn hours resulting in numerous injuries sustained by innocent bystanders while undercover officers responded with deadly forceagen
